There's a reason why race cars use them, it's not for efficiency, or strength.. that's negligible compared with helical gears. The meshing on helical gears creates greater bearing loads (thrust loads), especially at high torques, so the need for beefed up transmission case is needed for helical gears. Race cars merely do it for saving on weight.
Check out this crazy gear whine. lol. It would drive me crazy. I have a couple of friends with wrx's that have rebuilt transmissions with straight cut gears. Personally, the gear whine drives me crazy.
