  • Any econocars out there that doesn't use transverse engine?

Pretty soon I'm going to have to buy my wife a car. It has to be a fairly new car and either a 4 or a 6 cyl. And it has to be a 4 door economical-car, meaning it gets good gas mileage and it's cheap to insurance.

It just seems like every econo-cars I've looked that is 2000 and current have transverse engine. I have nothing against these types of engines but they are so hard to work on. No rooms for my fat hands and arms. Unlike my birds, which are easy to work on. I can replace belts, Alt, water pump, and such in less than an hour.

Only most of the cars from the 80's and early 90's are in forward mounts. So anything out there?

Late response, but this place could use some action.
Most econobox cars are transverse because they're FWD or AWD. Typically longitudinal engines are packaged in RWD cars.

If you don't mind doing a bit of work yourself, an E36 or older generation would fit the bill. Nissan/Toyota had a few RWD sedans in the late 80s and early 90s that could work too.
