I've seen a couple of 3.4 now with over 200k and no work has been done on them. I know there's a couple of 3.8 running out there with over 200k as well.
I would say they are both equally matched as far as reliability. My friend has a firebird with the 3.4 with over 200,000 still going strong and a non-smoker.
So far from what I've been reading here and seeing out there the 3.8 does suffer from bad gasket and weak bearings due to insufficient oil lubrication.
They are both very reliable. I would lean slightly toward the 3.4 in my opinion. I've owned cars with both engines and it really comes down to how you maintain them and how hard you drive them.
3.8 - look outside the F-bodies at the other GM platforms that used it (GTP, impala, lucern, buicks, etc) ...the engine has won the ward top 10 best engine award for a number of years.
I think the 3.8 has more aftermarket too including tunning.

That's not saying much...aside from nuts, bolts, and gaskets, there is next to nothing aftermarket for either one...lol. I'm waiting to see an aftermarket intake, but that will likely never happen unless ZZP designs a $2000 one.
I think we have alot of aftermarket for our 3.8's Ive been upgrading since 2002.

Last time I responded to a "thoughts and comments" thread yall ripped me a new one regardless of how many facts there were to back my comments. So short and sweet , 3.8, Best V sov configuration gm ever came out with. Remember Letspickupgrocerys I said V configuration sov and keep drilling the light stuff eventually you'll be up to a pound or 2.

1st off you had zero facts and you still haven't posted flow numbers... 2nd off, when you're "picking up your groceries in your 'grocery' getter" make sure you stop off in the mouthwash isle so you can get rid of that shi*t taste in your mouth from talking out your a** for so long.
3rd off, if you want to rehash the argument on the heads, go back to that thread and post your setup, your flow numbers and your race numbers /videos.
Unless you're going to put up... shut up, you're bench racing and bench building. Furthermore, my car sat at 3100lbs and you can ask anyone on this forum that saw it in person (and there are quite a few) that when you looked at that car, unless you were going over it with a fine tooth comb, you couldn't tell a for a damn that it was weight reduxed- and I didn't pull out half the stuff I wanted.
So your argument of saving a pound or two shows just how clueless you really are.
You want to talk "facts" I want numbers- not some fantasy theory you put together in your head to justify what you did or didn't do.
His screen name has a Z there, not an S....and it's "groceries". Way to bring up another thread instead of just dropping it and leaving it where it was.
Back on topic... I suppose the 3800 has more aftermarket support than I give it credit for. I work for a performance parts distributor, so I'm used to seeing primarily small block Chevy parts along with LSx and Ford stuff with the occasional Mopar. Very rarely do I ever see anything outside of those platforms. I do have a few ideas floating around in my head as far as an intake goes, a couple of which do involve a holden, or half holden intake, but I doubt any of those will come to life any time soon...

What kind of ideas...we had so many outside of the ITB setup
This was one of the manifolds we spec'd out- my buddy drafted this up using whatever program it was that he uses lol. He ran a bunch of air flow tests on it and it was awesome, but life got in the way for both of us...too damn busy, then I ended up parting the car because of all that stuff that happened etc etc.
yadda yadda yadda...Robert bought the intake and was hoping for the concept as well..my buddy didn't want to release the concept because he spent hours constructing and fine tuning it in the program...which sucks, because I really just want to see a custom setup built!
Dan has a nice one he was building over on FTV6, similar design to the one in the picture, except single throttle body design.
where is Robert anyways- I want an update on that intake lol
Quit bragging mine sits at 2908 with me in it, 1/2 tank, full roll cage, and 200 lbs of lead. Rules dictate 2900 minimum at end of race. It's called triangulation, try it, beats drilling the light stuff. By the way quit being such a crybaby when your "thoughts and ideas" are different from mainstream, makes you seem even more unconfident in your abilities. Lighten up Zfreed forgot to run it through spellcheck was too busy buyin groceries.
Actually Mike, that is one of my ideas. I read that thread when you first posted it a longtime ago and have been wanting to fab something up along those lines. I just need to get my hands on a Holden intake, but like I said, that most likely won't happen for a while, if not ever. I've got way too much on my plate right now. As much as I love my job, I may be leaving it and moving into a skill trade, and if that happens, everything gets put on hold for the foreseeable future.
