I've heard them make a variety of different noises. Most common would be a whirring/buzzing noise that is speed dependent and changes intensity with turning.
Jacking the car up and checking for play (wheel will rock up down and side to side if ti is bad) will help, but bearings can be noisy with no noticable play.
