Can you take the heads off w/o taking the engine out?
Can you take the heads off w/o taking the engine out?
This person that I know bought a nice Firebird with a blown head gasket for $800.
He wants to know if it's possible to remove the heads without removing the whole engine from the car? So he could replace the gasket.
I'm guessing no because of the tight space, but I've never removed our particular engine before so I could be wrong. You guys with more experience on this what do you think?
Re: Can you take the heads off w/o taking the engine out?
Yes you can. Very tight on the passenger side.

Re: Can you take the heads off w/o taking the engine out?
ya it isn't hard to do- your only PITA is mainly the lift bracket on the back of the head on the passenger side preventing you from getting the valvecover off
I've had the heads off a bunch of times in the 3800 with the motor in...I actually took the heads off before I pulled the motor to give me more room to work with when lifting it out (since the heads all had to come off anyways at that time)
in retrospect, the 3800 was cake work to work on in comparison to the LS1 in the same engine bay
Re: Can you take the heads off w/o taking the engine out?
Lift bracket was much easier with a good ratcheting box wrench. Mostly the muscle to break it loose, I think I did some prying of the wrench handle with the right object against the firewall or overhang

Still trying to find oil leak on my Camaro, it’s a tough one. I think it is the oil pressure sender myself. Leaking when raving and going into boost....
