  • EPA and the future of modding

Figured I'd drop in and make everyone aware of what's going on...for those of you I don't have on Facebook lol.

Seems like the EPA is at it again. They've put forth a proposal that is close to coming into effect that basically means no more modding of vehicles. Here is a link to one of the news outlets:

    https://www.yahoo.com/autos/epa-move...ail&soc_trk=ma

Coles notes on it: Basically if this is passed, it will be illegal for a company to sell an aftermarket part that changes/effects emissions...this basically covers every single part except for suspension related pieces.

Any supplier caught selling a part that can fit a "street worthy" vehicle or engine would be subject to a $37,500 fine per part/engine. Meaning all our aftermarket suppliers go out of business FAST...if they are out of business...we cease to have the ability to mod our cars... so this is kind of a big deal.

I've been hitting some of the boards and talking to some locals even here in Canada...and I know our locals over here are afraid of this getting passed.

SEMA has issued a statement on their website urging the community to sign the petition to get this overturned. My name is on it...I suggest anyone that cares about our hobby/sport...regardless of whether or not you race...should do the same. There are certainly 10's of thousands of jobs that could be lost over this as well...

    SEMA's statement:

I don't see this passing at all, I think people get bored and try to pass stupid laws.

Yup, it's been slowly happening in California. Smog centers look and inspect your mufflers for legality. Whereas before they ignore it. I couldn't even pass visual because my fuel pressure gauge is connected to my fuel rail. I literally beg the guy to pass it with my promise of removing it afterwards.

it's not about passing...it was snuck into existing documents and doesn't require a vote to have it come into effect. That is why SEMA is scrambling. Once the documents are approved, the EPA has every right to go ahead and hammer our supply chains and the only fight would be the supply companies taking this to federal court.

I'd still like to see it hit close to a million....we're a small minority...remember that...they don't exactly care what we think
