Toyota to scrap Celica, MR2 models

SAN FRANCISCO (CBS.MW) -- Toyota Motor on Friday officially announced plans to discontinue its demand-starved Celica and MR2 sports cars by the end of the 2005 model year, paving the way for brands such as the Scion.

Sales figures for the two cars have been extremely low, especially when compared with the wildly popular Camry and Corolla models.

"Our dealers tell us that the volume has been so small that certain stores haven't had one of these on the lot for months and don't know when they will get any more," said Mark McCready, director of pricing strategy and market analysis at CarsDirect.com.

To put demand in perspective, Toyota in June sold 37,603 units of its best-selling Camry, compared with only 790 Celicas and 263 MR2 Spyders.

Mike Chung, pricing and market analyst at Edmunds.com, said that the market will now move toward the comparable Scion line.

"People are just beginning to realize that Scion is Toyota, and Toyota doesn't want to cannibalize their own brands," he said.

The Celica was first introduced in the U.S. in 1971 and has drawn such accolades as Motor Trend's "Import Car of the Year," one of Car and Driver's "Ten Best Cars" and Consumer Reports "Most Reliable Sporty Car."

"The past few years, however, have been very challenging for both Celica and MR2 as competition in a segment where 'what's new' dominates," Don Osmond, general manager at Toyota, explained in a statement.

Toyota's "what's new" brands include the Matrix and Corolla XRS, Solara sports coupe and the Scion XA, XB and TC, said Osmond.

Gabriel Shenhar, senior test engineer at Consumer Reports, said the announcement had been expected for a long time.

    Good, they are junk anyways.

No bashes towards Toyota in terms of reliability, but I don't know who they were trying to fool putting those two cars out there.

Celica was a decent performer... well in terms of v6 f-body performance it was a good performer.

I'm not even a little bit surprised. They were both way overpriced. A 180hp Celica GT-S costs around $23,000! For that price, you could have a Mustang GT or a WRX. I also had a feeling that the Celica would be on its way out once the Scion tC was introduced. Compared to the Celica GT, the tC is faster and better-equipped for around $1600 less (according to Car and Driver). Why would you buy a Celica when the same company makes a faster, better, cheaper car? I think that maybe they could've saved the MR2 by bringing back a supercharged model or even just giving it the Celica GT-s motor.

When I bought my Corolla in July of last year I actually looked at some Celicas for S&G. The ones I saw on the lot had the same 1.8 engine as the Corolla... with a whopping 125 hp. I'm sorry, but something that looks as "sporty" as the Celica should have a lot more power than that. Plus those Celicas stickered at $21k compared to my fully-loaded Corolla LE's $15.9k.

Didn't see any 180-hp Celicas when I was shopping around. In fact, I didn't even know they existed. If I had been in the market for one they did a poor job presenting it...

(Don't get me wrong, I would never get an import "sport compact", I was just curious.)

I'm not sure on power numbers for the GT model, but the Celica GT-S has the same 180hp 4-cylinder available in the Vibe GT and Matrix XRS.

Celica = Overpriced and slow, much like the 3rd gen Eclipse.

                MR2 = way over priced.

Ahh, I really like that MR2. That thing is fun to drive and nimble on corners. My wife likes it too.

Too bad though for the Celica. That's like Toyota's f-body. It's been around for a long time and now they are pulling the plug. Supra more like their corvette. But it got pulled too.

I don't know what the young crowds see in those Scions. They are worst looking vehicles I have ever seen.

I too do like the mr2, but not this incarnation. I liked the 2nd gen turbos the most, except that they still can fetch a tidy sum off of auto trader. If only they had redesigned it and gave it more power...

Holy **** dude, you SO hit the nail on the head. I found out they were killing the celica and MR-2 when i test drove the tC and the dealer even said that the main reason was because of the tC.

Stefan you didn't know there are 180 hp celicas? Maybe Orlando is the only place with a few modded imports... Local guy with intake and exhaust and a chip was running 14.6s here with a 6-speed. They weren't total dogs especially comparing to v6 f-bodies.

I agree they were overpriced and the celica did look like a pissed off rabbit but I can't believe they let the celica and mr2 fall. Both were actually imports that were starting to get a little bit of a "history"

Oh well the same 180hp motor in the GTS is the same motor being put into the new Lotus from what I heard.

Well duhh....it's the question of "Will they ruin it" that comes to mind.

Though I have a feeling it'll be damn nice though the price will be far from affordable.

The Lotus Elise is what it's being put in, it'll be 190HP, and Lotus has tuned it differently.
