  • Radar / Laser Jammers

My buddy just got one of these "Shifter ZR3" things for his BMW. He said the guy he bought it off of showed it worked by flaunting it in front of some cops shooting radar going 90+.

Has anybody heard of this? Anyone know the legality of owning something like this?

Any radar/laser jammer you buy "off the shelf" is totally 100% worthless. Your friend got ripped off. They have been tested time and time again by various magazines and have been shown to be worthless. They would be illegal to sell and use. It is defintely illegal to jam a radio signal.

Now I have heard of people building them themselves (the concept isn't too difficult, the frequencies of police radar are not secret by any means). Although once again this is highly illegal.

actually, i went into some research about this when i wanted to get a radar jammer myself and michigan's official government page said they're only illeagal in a few states... the only ones i really remember were washington DC, oklahoma, and maybe one or two others. other than that, it will just piss off police officers to see them in your car. they're still leagal though. my girlfriend's dad is a cop and he said they're perfectly leagal, but cops don't like to see them and they're more likely to pull you over for something stupid if they see one in your car.

I've always been under the impression that just about any radar / laser detecter will let you know that you've been busted, and increase your chances of getting a ticket when the officer writes the ticket.

However, I kinda got excited hearing the story of how my buddy flew by the cop with the radar / laser detector going off. He was going 90+ when they went passed, and they did'nt slow down at all.

From what I'm hearing, you can actually purchase these things from high-end dealerships.

Radar jammers are illegal, but laser jammers are not (mostly because of the jurisdiction laser falls under - they're more under the FDA, oddly enough). There are real laser jammers out there that work, but most radar jammers are junk - Rocky Mountain Radar comes to mind.

I actually read that laser jammers do work, but a good one costs about $500 along with the $300 Radar detector.
Not worth it if you ask me...

I just stick to a radar/laser detector cause:

                          A) jammers are illegal here

                          and

                          B) if they see me speeding, the jamming won't do me any good

The next question is, what color will my car appear due to the massive red shift they will see.....

I used to have a radar jammer made by "mountain" something or other. It was completly worthless. I would drive by one of those mobile speed signs that show you your speed, nothing happened. I paid like $80 for it. What a rip off.
Your better off painting your car black.

ACTIVE radar jammers are absolutely illegal. Read the Communications Act of 1934. It is HIGHLY illegal to jam a radio signal in the United States.

Now places like Rocky Mountain Radar claim to sell passive radar jammers which supposedly put "white noise" in the return signal and jam the radar. Because it doesn't transmit a signal it is legal. However, as mentioned up above they are absolutely worthless.
