what do you guys normally drive in? ive heard overdrive is better for highway and not for street. is there really that big of a difference? i was driving yesterday going around 70 and floored it and it went slowly up to about 90. then i popped it into drive, and did the same thing and it took about half the time.. just curious!

Overdrive is just any gear that has a ratio numerically lower than 1.0:1. In this case, 4th gear. If you were driving an M5, overdrive would be 5th gear. In an A4 you can turn overdrive off (by choosing drive instead)....in an M5 you could choose to not shift into 5th. Yes, you will accelerate faster in 3rd than 4th....just like you'll accelerate faster in 2nd than 3rd.
It's called overdrive because each turn of input shaft results in more than 1 turn of the driveshaft.
Just put it in overdrive and leave it there. There is no reason to not use it (assuming you're not towing a trailer or something).
When you floor it, it usually unlocks the TC and downshifts into 3rd to help you accelerate. Sounds like yours didn't.Matt

over-drive is just like an extra gear. all you need to do i put it in overdrive cause your computer can decide weather you need it or not just fine.

In a dyno, you don't really want it to shift into 4th, since you only want 3rd gear (1.0:1). So in that case you can leave it in Drive.Matt
