  • Review of the Magnum

Currently I am in Albany GA, and while here on business I had a choice between a Dodge Caravan and Dodge Magnum. What the hell I thought, it has a Hemi..... WRONG. The rentals are equipped with a whopping 2.7l v6 engine.

    1) The car is ugly. Out of the 7 people to comment on it, 1 said it looks nice. Hell even the Budget said it was ugly.
    2) The seats. The Magnum is going with a new design for the headrest. It's called "angle forward so you drive hunched over". You have one of two choices in that car. Sit forward or tilt your head forward so you can sit back. Moving the rest up or down doesn't help.
    3) Airbags. The passenger airbag is INSIDE the dash. Most cars have a break away panel for the airbag. The Magnum has a seamless dash. WHY? Oh, cause maybe when you hit a car with that beast you'll blow out the entire dash and they can get you on the parts.
    4) There is no open trunk button inside the car. Yep, that's self explanitory.
    5) Trim. Well I hope you like sharp angles.... cause there's a lot of them.
    6) Power - the v6 model has none.... but it does red line up around 6500rpm so I guess that's a plus cause every time you floor it while doing 65mph it shifts down a gear and suddenly you're up at 5800rpm still going nowhere fast.
    7) The shifter sits inside of one of those "high tech" consoles. No straight movement from P - 1. Instead it's like a horrible maze for rats. Driving a manual stick shift is easier. Oh, there is no 2nd. You get L, 3 and D.... Ok.
    8) It does have a loud speaker system
    9) Wheelbase. It's longer than a Toyota 4 Runner (I pulled along side one and checked).
    10) It's heavy. Very loose steering that tends to pull to one side. It's like my truck. "Drives like a drunken cow"
    11) Space. Not a whole lot of trunk space, but it's damn long. Looking in the rear view mirror one is remided of a horrible cloth tunnel.
    12) Gas tank. In an effort to streamline the body there's no noticible "hey open here" on the tank cover. You have to push all sides till you find the right one.

That's all. I drove a Camry 2 weeks back. I think I now have more respect for it...

I'd take a magnum R/T, but not just a base magnum.

Too bad you got stuck with the tiny engine. The next model up V6 looks pretty good - 250HP.

I like the 300. It looks like an Enforcer from Spy Hunter. Magnum... the concept's front end was better.

As for the seamless dash... my dad's Caravan has the same thing. I've been trying to figure out where the airbag comes out. Anyone who can answer this gets a cookie.

I kinda pushed on the dash a bit. It feels like there is a soft area where the airbag would be. My guess is that the area is slightly perforated on the underside and when the bag blows it blows a hole in the dash.

That has to be one of the funniest analogies of a cars' handling I've heard ever!
Psykopig16: well the car will run with a broken crank..<br />RevLimit478: yeah, it\'ll run like a fat kid in summer

Since when does an american car maker engineer anything? Maybe it's just me, but whenever I look at how cars from the factory run wire/tubing/piping or any kind of line it looks like the worst possible routing is used. Fitment is pretty much "here is a space, lets shove the engine+trans in with no reguard for how it affects anything else."
