Jus....it's not a matter of punishing people for speeding. It's this. Cars nowadays have the capability of driving 70-75mph without any regards to safety. Yet the speedlimit is still 55-60mph on freeway. Back then, because of the nature of the cars, the speedlimit was about 10-15, then it progressed as the cars did. But for some reason, the government wont listen to what researchers and manufacturers have said because they've realized that they can make a profit out of "speeders." I still think residential should maintain a 25mph speed limit, but on main streets...cmon now.

      1: If tickets are a source of revenue, one would not be able to appeal them. I recently spent 3 hours at traffic court. All but two tickest were thrown out.

      2: The national speed limit has more to do with the oil shortage at the time than anything else.

      3: Cars may have the capability to travel 70-75mph safely. But as proven constantly on this very board, the drivers are not responsable enough. No matter the speed limit, you will always whine that it is too slow. What you want is no speed limit. And that isn't going to happen.

Then they turn around and say they're protecting innocents from those terrible horrible monsters who are speeders. Give me a break.

        Ever heard of a quota? Its because fines are baked into their budgets. They NEED to write tickets to raise revenue. Where else do you think all that money would go? Do you think its a bonus to the city? Hell no, that money's already spent in their budget forecast LONG before the citation is even written.

        "Justice"? Yeah...
        Ok... Then how do you punish people who speed? Fine them less? If so, how is that a deterrent? (Listing the fines on the back of the ticket are a detterent for me, and so is that whole double fine in a work zone and school zone.) Would you rather pay higher taxes, or let people with the crap luck get caught and take care of it for you? Want to do 20 over? Be my guest, and help keep my taxes lower...

        How should speeders be punished? Jail?

        Oh, and I know how it feels... I got 2 non-moving violations that cost me 300 dollars.
        </font>
A more effective points system.

        Edit: Actually speeding shouldn't be a crime, because speeding doesnt cause more accidents. When Montana went from having no speed limits to having speed limits, the number of traffic accidents actually increased. Whats that? I thought speed kills.

              My first ticket was $133. I was doing 56 on a 35. My gf just got a ticket going 91 on a 70, and she only got her permit. Any idea what might happen to her?

                who was in the car with her???

                my guess is that she will have to wait until she is 18 to get her liscence. 20 over with just your permit isn't good!

                    I was in the car with her (and I'm 18). We were on our way down to Savannah from Atlanta and anybody who is from around here knows that I-16 is the loneliest road of them all. Speed limit is 70 but there's people hittin' 100 on it 'cause its nothing but a straightaway. So we're crusing down the freeway and up above on a bridge there's a cop car just "radar-ing" people, he sees my gf and hits the ramp towards the freeway and catches up to us. Guy was pretty nice, he made me and my gf switch so I'd be drivin and told us I had to be 21 and over for her to be able to drive my car with a permit, of course I acted dumb and told him I had been told i had to be 18 and older. He didn't ask for insurance or nothing, just gave my gf a warning for drivin' with only a permit with someone who's not over 21 years old and then the ticket for speedin'. Overall it was a pretty good day I must say.

                      Renzo, your GF is going to be paying at least $150 for that ticket probably (amounts vary) I know I paid a little over $200 for 86 in a 60. Btw, I agree with Stefan and 97chevy: the traffic laws are just ways for the government to get more money out of us. They're always trying to find new ways.

                          the cost of ticket fine is different is different towns..i've had some where its $95 and some where its $250..and some where they just send you to the slammer..depends how needy they are at the time..i hope you didnt plead guilty..NEVER plead guilty to a ticket..plead innocent and show up to court..the law is if the officer is not present at the time the trial begins he has one hour to arrive..if he does not arrive within that hour..you're a free man..some courts will have representatives present on behalf of the officer..these reps are usually very willing to quickly cut very good deals with you..that is because they know that your only witness in the trial..the cop (yes thats right..traffic court incidents are still trials where they must PROVE you guilty) is not present..then its really up to you whether or not you wish to accept their deal..also..always check that you wish to receive a supporting deposition and photo copy the front and back of your ticket before mailing it..technically you are supposed to be a free man if you are forced to show up to court without being provided with the supporting deposition that you requested (which they will see on your photo copies)...now slow down! lol..good luck
