Today marks the day where the earth's axis reaches it's maximum inclination toward the sun. Those of us on the northern hemisphere will see the sunniest/longest day of the year today. That means it's also the first day of summer.
You might think that the sunniest day of the year should be in the very middle of the summer season instead of the beginning. I'd agree, but that's not the case in the U.S.
The U.S. defines seasons to begin on the equinoxes and solstices. Many European countries mark their seasons so that their peak (rather than their beginning) falls on the solstices/equinoxes. As such, the summer solstice is known as Midsummer's Day. A certain playwright even wrote a play about the day...
