Got a chance to look under the hood of the GTP yesterday.
So the wife opens up the coolant resevior and what does she find, brown sludge.
Some stupid idiot mixed watern with dexcool. It says on the damn cap, dexcool ONLY. I'm half tempted to take it back to the dealership and say wtf is this ****.
I now need to take it to a radiator shop and have it flushed.

btw dexcool is gay. Damn sludge on an '04, luckily I didn't have any sludge in my 2k.

im confused... youre saying since you saw brown sludge someone must have put the green stuff in there? dexcool, at least before i changed mine last time, builds up a ton of the brown crap without ever touching it with the green stuff.

Hmm... Our matrix which has dexcool and has a few thousand more miles then the GTP and it's still the same color as when we bought it.
I know that mixing green and dexcool does cause a brown sludge.

A shop needs to do it to get all of it out. I foolishly mixed them in my old camaro because I didn't know any better and suffered the same problem.
There's a chance even having it done at a shop won't get all of it out.

Gross. Before the vette went, I changed out the coolant. It was some nasty stuff after 59k miles (and 11 years).
Crappy that an 04 would be like that.

It was explained to me that a brown sludge could also form from the supplement tablets the dealerships put in with fresh Dexcool. I flushed my radiator with two-part prestone acid/neutralizer heavy duty flush and refilled with Dex just for peace of mind. If you have a house, I'd recommend making a day of doing it yourself this way. Cost me around $8 for the coolant, $.69 for the distilled water, $6.25 for the flush and less than $4 for the prestone flushing kit which lets you backflush the system. Better than $80 for the same process (minus the HD flush).
Just be prepared to spend the better part of the day doing it, and don't do it at night like I did (D'oh!). ;)
