  • Looking to start motorcycle website & board

I'm looking to start up a website + message board for my motorcycle. There's not much technical info out there for my specific model, and I'd like to change that. Some other people have expressed interest too.

So far I've looked at UBB.x and Invision Power Board. These both offer board software and hosting together. Does anybody have any suggestions on message boards and/or webhosting services? There's about a thousand different boards out there, but they all seem too simple. I'm looking for something like UBB, but they don't seem to sell just the software. Anybody know anything about phpBB?

I like PHP Web Hosting. Site is ugly but it's inexpensive and you get a lot. You won't get the kind of thruput you need to host huge videos or file downloads, but you can't really expect it for ten bucks.

As far as message boards, there are plenty out there that you can use for free. PBPBB is one. There are literally thousands of templates you can download and use, tweak, etc.

          Software only.

Ideally you'll want to keep your hosting separate from your message board, that way there's a clear distinction between your HTML webpages and the dynamic scripts that make up the board.

We use www.hostgo.com for the site but Steve's server for the board. We originally hosted the board on HostGo but they got upset when we started using huge amounts of bandwidth. We could have upgraded our account with them but at the time Steve's server seemed like a cheaper alternative.

www.projectvirus.com is hosted on a HostGo personal server package as well, and we have a UBB there but the traffic is light. I suppose if traffic got heavy I'd have to pay the business rates ($100-$300/mo.) instead of the personal rates ($10-$30/mo.).

Just like I thought, UBB is expensive.

What are the differences between using a database and text file storage?
