• GM doing away with alternators and starters

from what i read the coils will be charged to make the flywheel spin and start the engine. Then (i guess by a relay) the flywheel will be charged and act like a alternator, GENIUS!!! I was starting to lose faith in gm not doing anything special. But I've looked around and no one else is trying this. Until someone on here proves me wrong. I can see how this can be very bad also, having to disconnect the tranny from engine when you have alternator probs.

Now we just need someone to realize that you can use that as a power booster as well. While you drive, the armature generates electricity which is stored. When you need a little more "oomph", hit a switch and the batteries discharge into the motor. :D

wonder how you would make a high output one for people with systems in the car? you know that stock will only be able to run the car and nothing else. on a side note, I thought that auto makers were going to switch from 12V to 24V sometime soon?

Check it, they say they are going to run a 48 volt system. So if you run that battery down w/ that big *** alternator. You will be worried about replacing your windshields before you need more power

yes, but how can you pull the engine and tranny apart to fix the alternator when there isn't one?

Interesting. So, where can we find these trucks that GM says already has this technology? I'd like to see what it's like using this new system

My brother works with this group. He says that he got to take one of the trucks home a couple of times to log road data. He says they're doing some pretty cool stuff, but he can't really talk about it. :(

Expect the auto landscape to change a lot in the next 10 years.

sierra/silverado hybrid has the system already, and the power boost thing someone was talking about...ya well gm uses that to get the car moving while the engine starts up....and yes it is a huge battery that takes up all the space under the backseat. they've converted to electric power steering pumps. kinda cool actually, but I still dont see the point to it.

Tom and Dick already have hybrids, so GM has to have them too... or else they get attacked for not being environmentally friendly, even though they streeted the first viable American electric cat (the EV1) and have a massive investment in hydrogen technology.

well i meant electric probs that come from the flywheel/starter then you would have to disconnect the 2

                      the silverado hybrid has that?

cool I drove one like that already, was pretty cool.

whatever system it is there is a good chance you need to redo it.
