1 gig of storage... pretty cool. I will stick with my POP3 based email, web email is a pain.

whats the point of invitation only free email? I mean, only selected people in this world are allowed to see their ultra-exclusive ads??

it's being beta tested.. better test now and find something wrong, disappoint only a few hundred people than a few hundred thousand later.

^^ you can use Outlook.. don't have to log on through web interface to view messages.

I am wondering if it will be POP3 capable... after all my hotmail account is hooked up through outlook for me.

And actually, I assume since its somewhat limited now, I just sent 2 pics about 2.5 mb total and they went FAST.

Most commonly recieved email is either Post Office Protocol or Internet Message Access Protocol.

Although it is possible to write your own protocol, it wouldn't be compadible with any other send mail protocols unless it was written to recognize. But they would defeat the purpose of writing your own protocol. So... That is why everyone uses POP or IMAP.

Sending mail protcols are SMTP and MIME (Simple mail transfer protocol/Multipurpose Internet Mail Extension)

The standard format is RFC 822.

Because I'm such a nice guy, the first 5 people to IM me will get a Gmail invite. I'll post when they're all gone.
                            Only 2 left :D

Simply, no. You can't do anything with aol unless you log in. You can't even FTP into your webspace without logging in

There are programs (that cost too much money) that will log into aol for you and act as a server for you to log into with Outlook/etc. and get your mail. To me that defeats the whole purpose of using something besides aol to get your mail.
