Most commonly recieved email is either Post Office Protocol or Internet Message Access Protocol.
Although it is possible to write your own protocol, it wouldn't be compadible with any other send mail protocols unless it was written to recognize. But they would defeat the purpose of writing your own protocol. So... That is why everyone uses POP or IMAP.
Sending mail protcols are SMTP and MIME (Simple mail transfer protocol/Multipurpose Internet Mail Extension)

Simply, no. You can't do anything with aol unless you log in. You can't even FTP into your webspace without logging in
There are programs (that cost too much money) that will log into aol for you and act as a server for you to log into with Outlook/etc. and get your mail. To me that defeats the whole purpose of using something besides aol to get your mail.
