No, AK-47's are not illegal, but full-auto machine guns are heavily regulated by the National Firearms Act of the 1930's, and laws enacted in 1968 and 1986. Laws vary from state to state on whether private citizens can own NFA weapons or not.

What he has is not a real AK-47, but a Romanian-made semi-auto clone, probably a SAR-1 or WASR-10. I've got two Chinese-made AK clones called MAK-90. They're all based on the AK action, but don't shoot full-auto.

I'd stuff one of them bulky Delco radios far up his azz to make him regret it for the rest of his life. I love it. I even bought another one with a synthetic stock, pistol grip, and threaded barrel. With my 75rd Chinese drum I go through ammo pretty fast ;)
