math question (word problem style)

Bill takes 4 hours to do a job.
If Bill and Fred work together, it takes 2 2/9 hours to complete the same job.
How long would it have taken Fred to do it by himself?

if you use easy numbers:
bill 4 hrs
fred 4 hrs
then together they should each be doing half the work
total time together - 2 hrs
seeing as how the total for the 2 working together is greater than 2 hrs, that should mean that Fred by himself would take longer than Bill's 4 hrs
if that makes sense
one of my smart buddies gave me a whole equation thing that I will post after awhile.

5 Hours!

Fred shaves 1 7/9 hours off the job, meaning he is working less hard.

Divide 2 2/9 hours into 4 hours and multiply the result by 1 7/9 hours.
