This came to mind in another political post but I couldn't quite figure out how to tie it to the topic at hand. (Notice I am not hijacking another topic by posting this!)
A few months ago there was a post saying "If you're a Republican you must believe..." and the same for Democrats. Though very one-sided and funny, some of them held true.
The one that comes to mind is this:
The obvious reference here is that Republicans tend to favor free big business while Democrats tend to favor corporate regulation.
While I am a corporate zombie working on my MBA and I'm all for free enterprise, a reality check needs to be applied here.
Big business does not bring about prosperity. Big business brings about wasteful, slothlike bureaucracy. Doing business with huge multinational corporations like GM, IBM, Pfizer, or whoever is just like doing business with the feds. Their employees are morons, their operations are hideously inefficient, their return on assets is pitiful compared to smaller, more nimble, more actively managed companies.
Big business takes humanity out of business. They treat customers like numbers. They make many, many, MANY mindless mistakes that any lesser company would go belly-up from and then just write off the wasted expenses. And, since corporations only get taxed on profits (revenues less all expenses, needed or unnecessary), they don't pay taxes on thier wasted ventures.
Being for business is not the same as being for big business. I for one would not be able to handle working for one of those behemoth corporations. Many of my coworkers came from that sort of environment and they couldn't stand it either. When people talk about having a conference call to discuss what to talk about at the meeting that's planning for the big conference call they're not kidding.
So yes, it is possible to be against "big business" while still being a businessman who favors small/medium business. So when diehard Republicans say "you either support American business or you're against it" they're oversimplifying.
