I've seen too much mechanical failure among cars with friends; it's scary. Luckly never happened to me.
2002 Focus Zx3, 40k miles. Right rear wheel bearings locked up at 55mph flat spotting the tire. No accident.
1993 Saturn SL1, investigators determined that a driver front wheel FELL OFF, sending them into the oppsite side ditch where it flipped and broke off a telephone pole approx 15 ft in the air. Both passengers died. Happend at 1pm on a sunday.
