portable hard drives

let's talk.

My notebook is limited by it's 10gig hard drive, and it's cheaper to get portable ones than replacement (Dell CPt S600)

I prefer usb powered, but may also look into dual power if needed. Price around $150. whatacha recommend?

Now days any modern mp3 player can store about 4 times as much as your laptop's HD. I'd go on ebay or craigslist and look into an Ipod, RCA Lyra, or Creative Nomad Zen..Could find a 40gb one for around $100. I personally have an RCA A/V Lyra Jukebox that does everything imaginable including backing up files and running as an external hard drive. Just make sure it has usb 2.0 connector.

I think most of them can be powered by usb, but you can always plug in the ac adaptor or use the battery if not

eh, mine does. granted it's a 2.5 slim drive in a usb enclosure but it's still 20gb, I think I paid 100$ for it at compusa

That is not necessarily true...

Some drives come with a two port usb cord. They also have USB hard drives with external PSU's.

Dell says his CPt S600 has "one USB-compliant connector", which I'm almost positive is going to be USB 1.1, given the age of his laptop and the fact that it's an economy version (Celeron, etc.) The USB connector may provide something like 500 mA, but that's about it. That's not even enough to charged an iPod correctly. Then there's USB 1.1, which is a max of 12Mbps, which is ungodly slow for data transfer.

What he should really do is buy a new, faster harddrive for his laptop. He can get a 5400rpm (probably has a 4200rpm drive now) 60GB drive for about $90. Stay away from Hitachi (was IBM Deathstars, quality hasn't seemed to get any better) and Fujitsu.

I'm not gonna replace the laptop hard drive, as the size is big enough for what it's intended for. I just happen to have around 30 gig or so of music/vids at my disposal that I'd like to take w/me back home and not use up my laptop's memory.

Powered usb hard drive is an option too.

You should really just replace the harddrive

but you can get a powered, external USB drive for about $80 and up. Since you'll be plugging it into a USB 1.1 port, you'll be getting speeds of up to 11Mbps. In comparison, ATA-100 hdd transfer data at 800Mbps.

I don't care what the transfer rate will be on the Dell, I just want to make sure I get one that is compatable and preferably self powered. I still plan on using the Dell for tuning mainly,(especially when I get another tunable car to go along w/the GP) as I have "modern" facilities at home.

EDIT: let's just say that 110v outlets are at a premium, and 220v are plentiful. I'm just glad that the laptop charger is dual voltage :cool: :D

Like I said, it's highly doubtful your laptop will be able to power any kind of external storage device, even something as simple as an iPod.

Go to Control Panel-&gt;System-&gt;Device Manager-&gt;Universal Serial Bus controllers

right click on the hub/one of the hubs, select the Power tab, and you'll see how much power is available

Any 3.5" enclosed external hdd you find is going to need 110V.

Don't you guys have a big problem with power spikes, or are you guys not roughing it that much over there?
