• Network Gurus...I have a challenge for you!

Here is my problem. I have a windows xp pro machine at home behind a wireless G Belkin router.

I also have a windows xp home on my laptop.

My goal is to be able to link up to my home network and access my shared drives on my desktop from school.

I have Microsoft VPN on both machines.
A belkin router with vitual server. It says it can take incomming request and route it to a specified ip and port.

I know my routers Modems IP, I know I have to make my desktop a static IP. And I know I need to specify the inbound ports and the private ports. I just don't know what they are.

What really gets me is the login info. Is that for the machine I want to get in to or remote on.

how much information are we looking at? I don't now if that is possible or not unless you are on the same network, but I may be wrong. Look into getting a USB flash drive, cehap and holds craploads of stuff.

if $180 is out of your range, you can go smaller, but that one there is an extremely crazy deal because that is the average price for a 2Gig drive.

I don't really want a flash drive. This is mainly because I work on projects from home and school, and I don't want to have to worry about saving to the flash. And even better would be able to stream my mp3s off my Desktop to my Wireless Laptop at school.

Run a FTP Server off your comp at home, and access it from school. THat way you just route from your wireless router to your pc at home.

no use the VPN it way easier after you get it up and running
LAN SIDE
to stic your ip for you computers you need info from your router
TURN OFF THE DHCP SEVER ON YOUR ROUTER

enter the static addys see below

Ip address's (defualt is 192.168.1.100 (first one)so add in 2 or 3 192.168.1.101 and 192.168.1.102
subnet mask (defualt on most is 255.255.255.0)

defualt gateway (this is the ip addy of your router) defualt is 192.168.1.1 (this is usally what you use to login to the router)

WAN side of router
ip (this is the ip from you sevice provider you will need this on your remote computer to get to your VPN)(and the subnet mask too)

also write down your DNS addy's in the router

next go on your PC to network conections
go to properties
click tcp/ip thing and hit properties

take it off auto

the ip is the address you tell the router
for computer 1 should look like
192.168.1.100
255.255.255.0
192.168.1.1 (defualt gateway (router ip)

then enter your DNS addy's that you wrote down from the router....
only need one but if it goes down your dead in the water so put 2 in there, if you want more then click advanced > DNS tab and add more in

http://www.cisco.com/univercd/cc/td/...ref/vpnlan.htm << best info on VPN with out going to the cicso classes like i did lol

VPN port is 1723 in most cases

NOTE:
the IP, subnetmask AND DNS must match with the static ips/subnet you set up in the router or it will not pass traffic from the computer

one problem may be that your school blocks ports.. In which case there is no way to do these things.. Also learn how to forward ports to IP Addresses on your router.
