  • Firebird Flew

Yeah I almost died. I was doing some spirited driving, along a 2lane road it was about 10ish. Going around a left hand turn (60ish) and there stands a huge buck, I'm on the brakes and just trying to keep it on the road. The deer spins around and tries to run to the other side of the road, but fell. I steer over to the right hand shoulder to try to slip around him, passenger side tires are all the way in the gravel and grass. And I'm a little sideways. I felt the back tire on the drivers side drop into the gravel. Tons of little rocks hitting underneath my car. But yeah as soon as the back driver side tire hit the gravel there was no hope.

So I'm half sideways, sliding 10 feet or so away from the road, (wet field of grass is extremely slick) So I'm through the "turn" and the road has straightened out, I'm about 15-20 feet off the side of the road. I'm still sideways, on it trying to get back on pavement. At this point I'm not to worried I'm still sliding but controlled, then, whoooshh air born. Never even saw it coming, I was looking back towards the road, between my dark windows and it being 10pm couldn't see out the side window anyways. I went maybe 5 feet or so, airborn and sideways. Landed spun around backwards, and slide right back up on the road, facing the wrong direction. So I turned around and headed on home, at about 20 mph the rest of the way home.

Exhaust already had a little bit of a rattle but now it's slightly more noticeable. I'm not to worried about that, it's getting replaced soon anyways. I'm more worried about suspension and stuff.

It drives fine now, but right after it happened, I had huge chunk of grass/mud inside my rims. It caused a really bad shake going down the road at just 20-25mph. So I stopped and sprayed all the junk out, and that fixed that problem.

Everything felt fine after that. I'm just worried I may have messed up something thats not apparent right now.

    Step 1) Slow down

Step 2) Give keys to someone else

Step 3) Walk up to wall

Step 4) Put both hands on wall

Step 5) Smash head into wall

    Slow down.

I would rather go around an animal in an f-body. Deer like to jump, and it stands a good chance of going through your windshield in our low slung cars.

While you are thinking about it, think about swerving, losing control, hitting something a lot more solid then a few 100lb animal or another car.

if you hit the deer then the insurance will pay for erything with just the min. deductable but if you swerve and wreck it then they will screw you. Happened to my dad, insurance guy said it would have been better just to hit the son of a *****.

Ya. 3000lb vehicle vs 200lb animal. Your car might get hurt, but its definitly gonna win that fight. And deer just stand there dumb when they get hit. I have a hard time seeing a doe go through my windshield, 40+ mph on a slanted, hardend windshield, I'll take my chances. On a buck I wouldnt be so confident with those antlers though.

Nicklz is lucky as all hell though. I saw Firebird flew, and I had a mental image of his car resting on its roof. Screw the car, your lucky to survive unharmed when launching a car airborne @50 mph.

I hit a dear at 40mph in my firebird a few years ago. bumper didnt break, but the mounts cracked so it had to be replaced, broke the headlight off cuz it was open, shifted hood about a 1/4", bent windshield frame, cracked one of the ribs in the converable top, and ripped off my antenna as if flew off the back of my car. fbodys are like wedges of death, they just scoope up the dear and go under it.
