  • So you want to look sexy for 2005

This seems to be a common thing for the New Year for both men and women. I remember how gym membership would increase and personal training would be good for only a couple of months. I would say by the end of January, 50% of those who joined are gone and by March 80-90% are gone.

Your goal is to be realistic. Don't put your face on Arnold S. body. Set short term goals and beat it.

Follow an exercise routine that would not take most of your day. A good 30 min. weight training a day. Along with 20 min. of aerobic should be sufficient.

Don't do diets that leaves you hungry all day or starving for carbs. Eat plenty of fruits and vegetable. Get a good balance amount of complex carbs, protien and some fat. Stay away from simple sugar enriched carbs junk food, and tasty high fat food.

Drink plenty of water. Coffee and sodas are not the same as drinking water. Gatorade is also not the same as water. Don't fall for that false message that it's better than water, it's not.

Keep a journal and write everything down. Take pictures if possible. Remember, your goal is not only to look good but more importantly to be healthy.

I started training again the day after xmas. Since I am joining the Marines, it would be in my best interest to not give up by march.

      Thor-

I have long wondered about this: is weightroom variety good or bad?

When I settle into a set routine at the weightroom, I notice little improvement. Lately, I have been mixing it up a lot. After a 3 mile run, I will just wander around the weightroom and try out different exercises. IF I want to do triceps, I will do french press one day, dips the next, etc...

Well, right now, I'm working out, and have been for the past year and a half about 5-6 times a week. When I get back home, I'm going to start doing more cardio, so I'll probably be at the gym about 10 times a week. I don't know about other people, but when I'm weight training, I like to focus on one muscle group a day. Tonight is the back. Tomorrow will be my shoulders. I've noticed a lot of improvement on myself by doing that. Now, hopefully I can keep my dedication, and lose my gut that I've had my whole life.

Great advice. Too bad most people will have given up before they see any real results.

I'm not thor, but maybe I can help.
I suggest either bulking OR cutting. Doing lots of cardio and not much weight training will not help build muscle. You'll be very fit, but probably wont be very strong. So make (or find) a good gym routine and stick with that, keeping cardio to a minimum til you have enough muscle to start cutting. Once again, if you don't have a set plan, HGM is a great way to spend a year in the gym.

I don't want to be bulky. Describe this "cutting" thing to me.

Bulking is doing lots of weight training, little cardio, and eating like a football player. You'll build muscle (and fat).

Cutting is doing lots of cardio (like HIIT) and eating a little less to get rid of the fat you gained bulking but to keep the muscle.

Bulking/cutting cycles are probably the best way to get in great shape. And you can plan it out, like cutting before the beach and bulking during the holidays.

edit: HIIT is high intensity interval training. Like running your *** off then taking it easy then running your *** off again and so on. It doesn't shed muscle like running miles and is great for losing fat.

EolGul, that's pretty good. I don't think I could add anything else to that.

I'm confused about these... some have like 3 exercises listed in one area.. do you do all of those? or will any one suffice? Like cable seated row/B.B. Bent Over Row/D.B. Lying row?

                        thanks

this is rather ironic, because on monday when i went to the gym, their convience store-sized parking lot was damn near full, and id never seen so many ppl in my life in a gym before. it was about 8x more than there were around october/november

Yeah, basically you're workingout the same muscle group. It's best to just pick one and do sets on those. Once your body is used to that exercise, switch it around and do the same thing.

For example: Cable Seated Rows for 5 weeks and then switch to Bent Over Rows. It's not only good for the body but also for the mind (Helps release boredom). Plus you'll trigger different muscle fibers, that's why you'll feel some new soreness.
