• Computer doesn't want to stay on.

I moved the guts of one of my PCs into a new case. The first time I started it, the windows splash screen came on before it restarted. Then it got to the login screen. I shut it off, now it consistently only runs for about 4 seconds before shutting off - monitor sometimes flickers when I turn it on, sometimes not.

the CPU seemed to be quite warm when windows loaded. However, now that it's cooled down the problem persists. Ideas?

Pull the mobo set it on a piece of carboard with everything hooked up and power it up if it stays on it was grounding on the case.

I thought about that, but if there was a short wouldn't it not power on at all?

Maybe if you paid a little more attention to it and said a few sweet things every now and then it would stay on for you ;)

Usually it won't boot at all if there is a short..
does the mobo power down when it turns off, or a HD? Try a new plug for the HD, make sure there isn't a short, make sure the switch in the back is on 110, uhm... I can't think of anything else right now

When I had that problem with my computer the answer was a new power supply... Power supply just gave out.

Make sure that the power supply plug is well seated on the motherboard.

Make sure the cpu is well seated on the motherboard.

It very well could be the power supply. If so, get a good name brand one. And don't skimp on the wattage either.

Thanks guys, I'll tinker with it more in the morning - keep it comin!

It has a new 400W power supply, so I really hope that isn't the problem. It's just running 3 IDE hard drives now.

I kinda suspect the cpu heat sensor is being dumb... anyone know how those work so I can bypass it?

think the case has less air flow... I know someone that tried upgrading an old case and ran into problems of it overheating in the case.

RAM can also do it if it's bad. It'll just dump itself and computer will die. Had that happen to one of my old computers

its you rpower supply, prolly doesnt have enough balls to push it long enough, just upgrade your power supply and itll work great

If your heatsink is not attatched to your CPU very well, it will get hot immediately (like 10 seconds or less) and then usually your mobo has a default CPU shutdown temp(in the BIOS) on it once it gets a certain temp so it doesnt ruin your CPU.

Try re-seating your CPU and Heatsink/fan onto your motherboard.

I don't think the air flow in the case is the problem, there are 3 fans but it doesn't stay on long enough for the air flow to matter. I tried a different stick of ram, same result. I haven't tried the 320W psu it was running on before. The CPU gets hot enough to burn my fingers without a heat sink, but I don't have any thermal stuff to reapply. I've reseated the cpu several times. Would thermal paste be something worth trying before going for a new mobo?

Isn't troubleshooting fun?

if you booted it up without a heatsink on it and it got hot enought to burn you the chip is prolly fried now.
