Originally posted by 95DGcamaro: If your heatsink is not attatched to your CPU very well, it will get hot immediately (like 10 seconds or less) and then usually your mobo has a default CPU shutdown temp(in the BIOS) on it once it gets a certain temp so it doesnt ruin your CPU.
Try re-seating your CPU and Heatsink/fan onto your motherboard.
Originally posted by DrSquirts: I don't think the air flow in the case is the problem, there are 3 fans but it doesn't stay on long enough for the air flow to matter. I tried a different stick of ram, same result. I haven't tried the 320W psu it was running on before. The CPU gets hot enough to burn my fingers without a heat sink, but I don't have any thermal stuff to reapply. I've reseated the cpu several times. Would thermal paste be something worth trying before going for a new mobo?
Isn't troubleshooting fun?
I know this is an old post, but in one word about the thermal paste... YES! The thermal paste fills in all the gaps between the cpu and heatsink so heat transfer is optimized. Without it, heat doesn't go from the CPU to the heatsink, and the heatsink can't do its job properly. Hopefully Mr. Squirts hasn't been dealing with this problem all this time... :D
