• A question...

A plane is standing on a movable runway (something like a giant treadmill). As the plane moves the treadmill moves but in the opposite direction. The treadmill has a system that tracks the speed of the plane and matches it exactly in the opposite direction.

The question is: will the plane take off or not?

And now it strikes this board! Every message board I go to has had pages upon pages of arguing about this.

25 pages of arguing among pilots: http://forums.flightinfo.com/showthread.php?t=66860

It's also on a popular aviation website: http://www.avweb.com/news/columns/191034-1.html (halfway down)

Wether or not a plane flies depends only on its air speed, not ground speed.

I guess it does depend on how you interpret the question though.

The thrust would still act on the air, regardless of the actions on the wheels IMO.

no. the wheels are spinning but there is no real forward movement of the aircraft, thus no lift is created to allow it to fly. the aircraft as a whole need to move into the wind.

So what happens when a plane lands on the treadmill? Does it just instantly stop?

Assuming the brakes are off, the propeller will pull the airplane through the air regardless of the treadmill.

To be fair, I'm a commerical pilot (flight instructor by Friday!) and I said the same thing at first.

Yes, it will take off and fly without any hesitation.

Now wth that guestion, does the plane have a prop??

If it does have a prop i will have to say upon landing that it will not stay on the treadmill, the prop will pull the plane forwand until the prop is slowed down.

Not a pilot but been around planes all my life, my dad flies so we talk and fly alot. weather permitting.

If it is suppose to fly, then how? Because even though the engines are supplying the propulsion, the treadmill is counter acting the moving rendering the airplane motionless. Airplanes require air flow around the wings providing lift which is not achievable while being stationary.

which is why it will not fly off the treadmill.
