a witness is someone who spreads the word of god, or at least that's what i've been taught. like, when you talk to someone about the gospel, you are "witnessing" to them. </font>
And a withness is a gay one of those.... </font>
The most argue that my friend and I get into is the divinity of Jesus. They don't believe Jesus is God in spirit or the doctrine of the Holy Trinity.
Their John Chapter 1 doesn't say the Word became flesh and the Word was with God and the Word is God. It is totally different. I told him that it was heresy for them to change verses.
He always say, show me the word Trinity in the Bible. I always told him that I can't. I can only show it to him, but it's like talking to a wall.
He also won't acknowledge history that it was the Catholics and the Orthodox that put the books together and called it a Bible in the 3rd century in the council of Trent and Hippo. So before that, there was tradition. Ofcourse that's out the door to him.
But I win when I tell him that God's name is not Jehovah, but Yahweh. That would end our conversation.
Jehovah is a misinterpretation. They thought the 'Y' was 'J'and they added vowels to it in order to pronounce it in their readings. I think it was the Germans that created the mishaps. Ever since then the Protestants have been saying Jehovah.

The way I interpret the sideline preaching that he offers any chance he can get is this: There is no hell. they dont believe in it. you die, then your soul goes into suspended animation awaiting Judgement Day. God will destroy the earth and purge it of mans mistakes. He will then accept 144,000 worthy souls into heaven to enjoy the rest of forever. (BTW, the only way you can be considered worthy is to be a J.W.) The rest of the souls will just sort of blink out of existence.
I think you're right. The religion itself was started by Charles T. Russell in 1879. In the same light that Christian Fundamentalist, Latter Day Saints and Seven Day Adventist were winning converts.
My friend always tell me, are you one of the 144,000. I always say no, are you? There's millions of J.W. world wide now. If they believe this dogma, I don't know how 144,000 of them would be saved. Who each of them think they would be.

Dude out of the 100 billion people that have every lived, lets be honest...no one that we know personally would make the cut of 144,000 people to go to heaven.

El was a preisraelite god in canaan. The sacred geography associated with El (which is related to Baal...think Mount Zion) is the same as the sacred geography related to God as the Israelites knew it.
Sorta like how christianity absorbed pagan stuff...so did the jews kinda.
I'm pretty sure El is also related to a semitic root for god. Pretty sure there is some connection to it in arabic as well as hebrew.

That is correct. El is a semitic call for the word we use as God. But before Abraham, there were many El, as many as 300 if I remember correctly. Even Allah was part of that El. If there's any Muslim here you can certainly quote me on this. Just check early history.
Like the word God can be use in other non-christian religions today. God's name YHWH (with added vowels for pronounciation Yahweh)or I AM, is very sacred and Jews are forbidden to say it, even today. Why did you think Jesus got into such a mess for using it. Early Bible that got put together by the Catholic used Yahweh just like the Jews. But Protestant through their interpretation of the Bible and distributing the copies throughout thought the Y was J and the W to be V so it was JHVH (with vowels added Jehovah).
Cultural assimilation is a common phenomenon with different ethinicity. Back then a lot of that can said that the Egyptians culture was a big contributor. Ofcourse if you look at the practice of Judeo-christians and Jews there's a lot of shared commonalities. Even the church clothes they wear.
Just like the USA is the dominant culture of today because of the strong belief in capitalism. Go to any country nowadays and you can see some of that, especially music and clothes. I went to Japan at one time and somebody was saying the F word.

Coming from a former hardcore atheist, I totally disagree. There's a lot more dynamics than you think. Ofcourse I'm not going to discuss it here because that's not the topic and you guys want this locked.
Tell you want, e-mail me if you want more discussion.

Tell you want, e-mail me if you want more discussion. </font>
Its not faith itself I disagree with, it is the rules that the human race has incorporated with religion. Some rules are simple morals, which are good, but some are just stupid. These rules were incorporated by issuing a book, which most call the bible or koran or whatever, to keep simple minded people under control of those who have power, while they rape a society of anything and everything decent.
I have faith, but not a religion, if you can understand what I mean. I am definitely not an atheist, what I believe is similar to a belief called "deism" (sp?). One god, no rules, no book, only ideas and a somewhat guessimate of what has happened according to a rule called "The Watchmaker Theory" (Some that have possibly taken a political science class in college might have heard of it, or something similar to it).
I just like to think that instead of living by rules that there are more ideas. Which now brings be back to Jehovahs Witness's. To come to my door and say that there will only be 144,000 people that will see heaven is a blatant attempt by those with the power of persuasion and fear that some will believe this. I think some people are so desperate that they will believe this, turning religion into some sort of "competition" for the best 144,000. It is "Dynamics" like this that only prove my point.
I would have thought that in the age that we live in now, in the 21st century, that mankind would have been smart enough to open their eyes and realize that God is not out to look for the best of the best, nor is he here to punish those who break a set of rules. I believe we are here to enjoy a beautiful creation we have called life. I also believe that God does not judge, punish, favor, or despise any one soul on this planet. God created our souls to do all those things for ourselves, as equals. My belief is that he created us all, to live together in this one creation, to share all with everyone, to judge only those who need judge, and to punish those who need punished, and to adorn who need be adorned.
My ultimate belief; God has wound the clock, it is up to all life in this world to move the hands.
