  • Just emptied a tank of gas and...

320.9 Miles to that tank. I don't know if anyone has ever had their mileage in that range before, but I just wanted to say :D

I will let you in on my secret for getting that high of gas mileage. (But don't tell anyone) ;)

    New spark plugs/wires
    Seafoam
    Free ram air
    Accelerate a bit slower
    Keep the RPMs down

I dont know if the plugs/wires amount to much, but I was losing gas with a misfire, so they have to count for a little.

Seafoam on the other hand... Wow. For any of you who have never tried this stuff, you're burning money. I jumped 15-20 miles per tank after this stuff. Not to mention how smoothe the ride was after I did it. This stuff is great and I will continue to use it each time I change the oil (which is recommended).

Free Ram Air does a little. You get a throatier sound at higher RPMs and more air into the engine. I increased about 5 miles per tank with this. I have included a picture if any of you wish to do this FREE mod. Just use a dremel and cut along the dotted red lines (after taking the assembly out, that is ;) ).
    http://img282.echo.cx/img282/3345/03...eair11z8oo.jpg

Accelerate a bit slower and keep the RPMs down pretty much speak for themselves. I was revving to about 3K before I shifted into the next gear (except from 4th to 5th, of course, that was about 2500) And it gets you some more mileage per tank for sure. Just kinda baby it a little. Instead of shifting at 3K, shift at around 2500-2700, it helps a little. For autos, just dont push as far down on the pedal when you accelerate. Oh, and on top of that for manuals, put it in 5th gear as often as possible to keep the RPMs down.

Before I did these 5 things, I was getting around 270-280 a tank. Now I never get below 300. With gas prices as high as they are now and considering they are going to continue rising, I would think about freeing up some air and using the seafoam.

I jumped about 15 miles per tank after the seafoam alone.

Just thought I would drop some money saving tips out for you guys, since a lot of you helped me with the spark plugs a few weeks back. Hope this saves you some money so you can throw it into future mods.

Accelerate a little slower? That's no fun. What about my 5600rpm shift light. [img]smile.gif[/img]

        thats...all..you got?

If I run mine dry I get 400 miles on one tank. I usually stop around 380 to fill up, and it takes 15.5 (so I have 1 more gallon to go theoretically).

        I have an A4 with a 2800 stall too. I don't think 320 is worthy of bragging even for a 3.4

I run 87 octane, have the original O2 sensors, and I have 120,000 on mine now.

Damn, are you serious? 400? Thats crazy. I have never seen another 3800II get anywhere close to that. I should buy your mods. :D (Not calling you a liar or anything, it's just that 400 is  )

And I have been driving for quite a while. Over 6 years, why?

I have never got anything close to 300 when I first got my car, I think getting 40 extra miles per tank is pretty good.

My math could be wrong, but you only got around 20 MPG... that's pretty bad. I would cry if I got that.

Was that 320 miles all highway, or city?

My 3.4 just got 320 miles on 13.4 gallons with 100 of those miles in the city... LOL those numbers aren't that impressive [img]tongue.gif[/img]

I used to get around 330-340 to a tank on my old 99 3.8, only if I drove "normal". Now with my F150 with a 4.6L, 25 gal tank, I drive with the tailgate down and can squeeze 360 out of a tank!!!!HA!!! Driving with the tailgate down gets another 20-30 mpg. Beat that ;)

The 320 miles was all city. Not one mile of highway.

I guess I could be considered sheltered. I thought most of the 3800IIs got around 17-20 on average. Damn, my gas mileage sucks. Haha.

I was just very impressed that my car went up 40 miles per tank after spending about 6 bucks.

Never knew putting the tailgate down added 20-30 mpg ;)

You get less gas mileage in the city. So its not that bad. I'm sure you would of gotten a lot more if those were all highway miles.

Keep in mind... I believe our cars switched to a 16.8 gallon tank from a 15.5 gallon tank in 1998. I have a '97 Camaro M5 and I can get in the 325 range driving normally including 1 or 2 short WOT runs. So a perfectly upkept 3.8 with a 16.8 gallon tank could get around 400 miles to a tank.

Look, not trying to be harsh or to flame, but this "miles per tank" business is ABSURD.

I've held back that comment for years now on this board, and I must say...arg:mad:. It is not rocket science to compute you miles per gallon, people. Miles per tanks is just not a reliable measure. Period.

(You can't fill it precisely each time, and you can bet that no one else here fills at the same fuel level as you. Therefore, you cannot compare numbers.)

Ok. Sorry for all of that up there. Now for the helpful part :D :
To compute your miles per gallon you need 1) A working trip meter, 2) Enough cash to fill the tank each stop, 3) Basic math skills (dividing).

[Step 0] Best if you start with a full tank
                              [Step 1] Drive some
[Step 2] Go to fuel station; pull to pump
(steps 3 and 4 may be done in an appropriate order)
[Step 3] Fill the tank to the top
[Step 4] Pay for gas & get receipt
[Step 5] Make note of trip meter distance (write on receipt)
[Step 6] Divide number of miles traveled by how much fuel you just put in your tank
(now you have your average miles per gallon)
[Step 7] Set trip meter to zero miles
                              [Step 8] Drive some more
[Step 9] Repeat (keep logs if you geek out over it)
                              [img]graemlins/popcorn.gif[/img]
