The airplane can time how long it takes you to go between 2 points on the road. Knowing the distance, it's very simple to calculate the speed. That's why there's often lines drawn across the middle of the road.

I got hit with something very simialar, though it was a trooper running a radar station and radioing to 4 cars. Claimed I was doing 73 in a 55. I had cruise set at 62. Wouldnt show me a radar reading.... they couldnt, one person was standing behind a tree clocking car after car, and there was a string of 4 people pulled over about 1 mile from where they were clocking.

I showed up at court and they were going to 'offer' me 70. I refused and told them I was going 62, no more, no less. after some arguing about them not having any proof they were going to 'offer' me 65. I declined again and after a while the judge got tired of waiting and told them to place a charge, at which point they gave me 62 in a 55.

Ya ask the plane to land on the interstate and show you, they have to do it.

I don't know how much you can fight it... isn't it your word against theirs? And theirs means more in court than yours.

Don't be fooled by the signs on the road indicating that aircraft are used to enforce speed limits. What a joke! This was attempted at one time, probably introduced by a cop who was a pilot, and the only time it is used now is for publicity purposes. It was designed to work like the speed trap except speeders were spotted from the air rather that a cop hiding in the bushes, sounds pretty simple. To use this method they need at least a $70,000 airplane, insurance, a pilot, an observer, full fuel at approximately $2.50/gallon, daylight, and clear weather with little or no wind. They still need the full backup of the ground crew just as is needed in the conventional speed trap. You do not have to be a genius to figure out which is a more cost effective way of writing tickets.

If you were ever wondering what the white markers that are painted on the shoulders of a highway and placed about every .2 miles were for this is it. The observer in the aircraft already knows the distance to be traveled so he simply calculates the amount of time it takes your vehicle to travel the fixed distance and the result is your speed in miles per hour. These markers can only be placed in specific areas and can't be used at night or if the ground is covered with snow. I am very interested in hearing from anyone who has ever gotten a ticket from this method. Again, as mentioned above, check the laws in your state about pleading not guilty to these and how many people are required to show up. The ticket writer, the observer, the pilot, the mechanic?

Timers are basically glorified stopwatches. An officer marks two landmarks of a known distance (in aircraft, the highway hash marks are used). Then as a vehicle crosses the first landmark, an officer starts a timer. As the vehicle crosses the second mark, the officer stops the timer. The speed is calculated as Distance moved/Time taken to move. However, reaction times of humans vary, and due to this, timer based speeds can be off by as much as 40 MPH. The further the distance between landmarks, the lower the error. But, after about 500 feet... it's pretty hard to see the start and end points. When using aircraft, if it's anything but a helo... how does the airplane match your speed, so that the viewpoint stays the same? It can't. So, the officer in the aircraft might be seeing your vehicle from 800 feet behind you when he starts to watch you... but be directly overhead by the time he stops his timer. Meaning that his vantage might have caused a 100 foot error in the distance he thought you moved. After all, he's not getting the same vantage point the entire time. Very accurate... as accurate as five day weather forecasts in St. Louis. You're lucky if they can even predict the presence of weather... much less what it will be. And your lucky if they can predict you have any speed... much less what that speed is... Now helos... much different... basically pacing from the air....

you have the right to request verification of the radar's calibration. some states also have the last mph recorded.

VASCAR is extremely inacurrate because it relys soley on the cops reflexes, which obviously, there is a huge margin of error.

:rolleyes: In NJ they HAVE to show you the reading on the radar (by law) if you ask to see it. It is grounds for dismissal in court if they don't.

Besides all of this though, I would suggest going to court on the scheduled date and simply pleading your case. Not much more you can do at this point except perhaps gather and present some information on the inaccuracies of that type of "radar". Also, Tyler, is this your first ticket or do you have points already? If you already have points on your record, the prosecutor may not cut you a break. If you have a clean record, he/she might be more forgiving. How many points was this ticket???

It would be somewhere in Title 39, chapter 4, but I just can't seem to find anything to validate that claim of yours. Not saying that you're wrong, maybe just misinformed....

I just spent 30 minutes reading through Title 39 of the New Jersey Permanent Statutes and didn't find a single reference to it, either in there or in multiple searches.

Just like that guy here in minnesota that got a ticket for 205mph in a 55. Only he was on a bone stock 1000cc bike. Rated top speed is around 175. Must have been a factory freak. :rolleyes:
