• Considering trading up for a Z28

So today i was at a local pool hall when i see this ad of a '96 Z28 for sale with 103k miles...$4500. My car blue books for $7000....but i can get tons more cause i have $1000 in the stereo and $500 in new tires. I figure i could sell my car for about $8000 or so...pay off my loan...$5000....and have $3000 left to put towards the $4500 and take out another loan for $1500.

Does this seem like a good plan? Or is there a better way of going about it?

You car blue books for $7k? That seems really high...

And I would not buy an LT1 over 100k miles.

why not? Lt1s are pretty strong engines.(except for the opti crap,i mean opti spark) as long as the car has been taken care of it will run fine.

current car- 95 Trans am- bolt ons, parked and collecting dust. why? because **** it

I do believe a well maintained lt1 will run fine, I know a guy who autocrosses his and it has like 180k on the stock motor.

but high mileage lt1s are not pinnacles of reliability...

and i doubt you will get $8k for the original person in the thread.

I think I might get $8k, $9k if I am really lucky and stretching it. got my car and I have a '00 with 50k miles, and a 5-speed with lsd... but other then that pretty much stock. So a little more wanted by kids looking for a cool car.

well I can get roughly 10k for my bird,if I wanted to sell it,Every firebird in the autotrader is above 10,High damand right now I guess. But yea if you go for the Z28 I would difinitly Rebuild the engine and while you are doing that throw some goodies in the engine also,Like a 383Stroker Lt1

                  </font>
no offense taken eric. im an exception. due to the fact that it was my own errors that have had me not driving the car for the last 4 months.

first off- i didnt know what i was getting into. i had no idea what to look for as far as failure points.(opti spark, intake leaks- these are the two major down falls of the lt1). the person who owned the car before me had some work done on it and whoever did the work did a terrrible job. they didnt use the right bolts on the exhaust manifolds, the intake manifold wasnt torqued down properly(i took the manifold of without a socket wrench) and they cross threaded a couple spark plugs.
now know the things i know now, i would have taken the car to a mechanic first to have it looked at before i bought it. the only reason i dont have the car right now is becuase i didnt have anymore free time to work on it myself. i took it to a mechanic that i knew would get the car running properly. the only problem with him is that he takes a little to much time. but for what hes charging me i dont mind. should be around 3-400 bucks for all the work he put into it.

my advice, take the car to a shop and have someone look at it first. if its fine buy it. for 4500 its worth it. itll take what?, the max of 2 maybe 3 years to pay off a 4500$ loan.(pending you sell your car for whatever price.) if you get the amount you think you can get for your car and pay off you loan, then 1500 for a car is a steal. pay off that loan, have it (re)built, and have fun.

i miss the v6 for many reasons but i wouldnt trade the new car for another v6. even if it has had its problems. but dont get me wrong though i would love to have another v6 sitting in the parking lot for a daily driver.

i dont miss my six at all. it was old and worn out, too many hard miles.

                    you will love the v8.

as for your situation, i dont think you could get as much as you want out of it. i would stay away from the lt1's and try to buy a 99+ LS1.

The whole Optispark issue was my biggest concern...and the value of my car is $8000 easy. I had a guy come up to me at the car wash about 3 weeks ago and offer me $7500 cash for it, cause he had checked it out once when i was parked somewhere and was a very serious buyer. I have his number still....

I just dont know. Ive heard alot about them being unreliable and all....but that doesnt mean all of them will be. This is tough, because my car has alot of sentimental value to me, i just dont know if its worth it.

                        I don't miss my 6er.... but I wouldn't want a High Mileage LT1 either.

My LT1 has a **** load of miles but it runs STRONG for the mileage. Oh yeah it doesn't burn or leak 0W-40 oil either.

I mean I know alot of lt1s can be good... but if I was to say so... I am willing to bet there are more used and abused beat up lt1s then good ones.

the newest one is 8 years old.

Older used sports cars can become money pits... I personally wouldn't take more then a like 6 month loan, maybe a year if it was pristine...

but alot of 100K 93-95 lt1s would for $4500 don't fit that, they are more in the $5500-6000

And green dragon... $10k for a 94 v6? I'm not so sure on that one either.
