Exactly. Just shut off the monitor when you aren't using it. I don't like listening for my hard drives to shut down and then power back up all the time - it worries me (prolly because I was the unfortunate owner of a few Deathstars)

k, in XP goto the Control Panel->Power Options->Power Schemes

at the bottom you can specify how long to wait before it goes into System standby

Try asking your friend if he did anything to the power settings?

and did you get my email about the web hosting?

I tried to put mine in hibernate back when I first built this. the truth is, its 43632463264536 times more annoying because it periodically spools the hdd and spins the fans.

you can here it cutting on and off. try sleeping during that. I can fall asleep to the low but constant hum of the fans, but this other thing is just nuts.

do you know if you have an asus motherboard? I know at work with the asus boards we have to change the power setting in the bios from s1 & s3 to just s1 only. but I'm pretty sure thats so it'll come out of hibernation, not to enable it.
