So Pat Benatar sang "Hit Me With Your Best Shot" in 1994... for some reason I do not see a girl singing a song with the lyrics "Hit me with your best shot, fire away" nowadays. Perhaps it had a different meaning in 94, or my mind is in the gutter.

I was using an ID3 tag on an MP3 and it said 94 (which was her greatest hits album)... turns out it was 89 when that song was released.

well, if you all know anything about Pat Benetar, you would know of her song, Hell is for Children. Which is a musical portrayal of sexually and physically abused children. One of the best songs ever written in my book. I'm a woman and a huge Pat Benetar fan. I can tell you the lyrics, "Hit me with your best shot, fire away." are a mere metophor. They are telling a man to give her what he got EMOTIONALLY because she's strong enough to take it. As in, tell me you want to break up with me, tell me you were a scum bag, tell me you don't love me. Blah blah blah cuz i can take it.

Advanced Placement Music theory/music comprehension in high school. When listening to a song with lyrics, you have to actually listen to how the words fit the mood of the music. That will give you the vocalists tone. (what feeling she/he is trying to portray from the song.)

Or music can be as dynamic as poetry and have a different meaning for everyone. There is no defined reality it is only percieved through an individual ;)

mmm hmmm...you are correct. You are speaking of what it means to different people which is the psych part of it. What i'm am speaking of is what the singer/songwriter is trying to get across... which is not neccessarily how people perceive it. ;)

what the singer thinks certainly does matter if you are a music enthusiast. Part of the beauty of music is how the artist/s emotions come out in that they are singing/playing.
