Anyone have suggestions as to which ones are a good value and work well (from personal experiences)?

It's called search. There is probably 5000 posts about which radar detectors are better than others.

yep...I did the search and found your suggestions on it too. (you being a police officer and all)

Just figured that there may be some new stuff in the past year that may be of note.

Honestly, I had a radar detector before I got this job and it rarley saved by ***. Most of the time if an officer has stationary radar and hes sitting there hiding from you your detector isn't going to pick it up anyway. But as far as the best I would go with a Valentine 1 which is about 400 bucks or a passport solo s2 with is aronud 350.00. By the way most of the time I couldn't care less if someone is speeding...I'm after all the meth heads and scrote bags hanging around my city. Have fun

Yeah, radar detector only helps if they aren't using lasers or driving on the road next to you. :\ I just don't speed that often.

Don't get me wrong, I don't go zipping through school zones at 80 mph, however I do 'flow' with traffic. In Atlanta, that can mean speeding on the highways while keeping up with traffic (in non-rush hour time).

I understand that few radar detectors will find the lasar signal, however I was more curious if the s2 for example is worth the $250.

Also, does the emergency vehicle features work now a days? I had heard years ago that not many emergency vehicles carry the 'beacon'.

Again, I don't want a cure all, and I know that not speeding is the only way, however just getting as much info together before deciding to buy one or not.

BTW, I am leaning towards the s2 if any. Anyone having one, your comments would be greatly appreciated (even if they are negative against it).

I have a V1... Arrows for the win!

No matter what you get you will have to modify your driving style accordingly and even then its kind of a crap shoot on you getting caught or not. I rarely even use mine anyone now that I live in VA, aka the you can't do anything without breaking a law state.

Beltronics cordless with 360 Laser. Much better than the cheapy Whistlers but not as expensive as the Valentine.

This thing has saved my a** more times than I can count. Some emergency vehicles set off my Bell, but not all. Depending on the state (i.e. Mass), road construction signs do.

                  Worth every penny and more.

and a PNI radar detector is good enough for me. And much cheaper. Just went on a 2000 mile road trip

Also let speeders pass you and follow so they can get the ticket

v1 is badass... Used my dads a few times its great, only complaint is its too good and pics up the doors to like walgreens and stuff as you drive by on the main road.

I have some cobra detector think it was about $150. My girlfriend bougth it for me. Honestly I love it, does a great job. I know I am in no way invincible, around town I think radar detectors are not too great but they are ideal for speed traps on open highway. I pick up radar like a 1 mile to 2 miles in advance.

but then again FL highways are pretty wide open and flat.
