  • Buying a Handgun

I'll be turning 21 in a week, and I'm looking for a handgun to go along with my MAK-90 (if it ever gets shipped  )
I'm want semi-auto, and I'll only be using it for target practice at the range.
The only weapons I've shoot so far are the M16/A2, M9 pistol, and a Mosin Nagant 1890.

Seeing that I've fired the M9 and I might be going into the Military in a few years I was leaning towards a Beretta 92FS.

What 9mm guns would you guys recommend?

What price range are you looking in?

I have a Spingfield XD that is an incredible little gun and very reasonable as far as price.

Also, Springfield has the G.I. and Mil-Spec versions of the 1911 that are very nice and very affordable.

Those 2 models allow you the choice of 9mm, .40, .357sig, and .45ACP

I had planned on the Springfield G.I. for my next purchase, but I might go with a Kimber. A little more money, but I like the fit and finish they have a little better.

As cheap as possible without sacrificing too much quality. No more than $600.

        i would suggest a 9mm or a .40.

bigger than that, you are lookin at a fairly serious gun, more than just for target practice.

I'm sorry, I forgot to specify that I wanted a 9mm. I'm looking for suggestions on specific models.

What do you guys think about 9mm carbines? I'm looking at a Hi-Point 995.

I have a Targus PT-111 ($325) that I love...its lightweight and compact, but when I get another gun I will get something bigger like a .357 or .40.

Stay away from Taruas and Glock. they are crap, no offense.

You cannot beat a Sig 226. they are around 450. They are accurate and outshoot most off the self guns

Sig P226? The cheapest I found was $700

                What about MKS/Hi-Point?

I bought mine used for less than $400, but it had less that 100 rounds shot through it. New they are between $4-500. They were named handgun of the year by some magazine, forget which, but I do have the article clipped. Very nice reliable gun.

Hi-Points are the Geo-Metro of the gun world.

go buy a magizine that has newspaper style paper(you will know what i mean) called Shotgun News.

Browning Hi-Power are good guns also.

Go to a local gun shop and look at their used guns.

I have to agree with Silv6, I also have a Taurus pt-111, and it jams all the time. I bought it brand new and it is well taken care of. It looks good though.

Glock = crap??? I can understand the Taurus, but in no way is the Glock crap. I own a Glock 22, 19, and a 37. Never had any problems and w/ the octogonal rifling, they're tack-drivers. And hell, you can pour sand in it and fire the damn thing underwater. Sigs are good guns too, but I prefer Glocks and HK's for my handguns.

Just go to a local gun shop and hold a few. Buy what feels natural in your hands. Maybe even go to a gun range and rent a couple so you can see how it performs.

In Boone there are only two gun stores, and one is never open. The other place requires you to give them your ID before holding a handgun. Guess I'll have to wait a week before they'll let me touch any of the guns. The next closest place is 40 min away down the mountain.

I don't think I want to spend that much.

I've never heard of Glock being crap. My friends who own multiple guns recommend Glock.

What do you guys think about my first choice, the Beretta 92FS? I like the new Olive Drab finish :D

92 fs is a nice pistol, a little on the large side but that makes it easy to shoot all day.

                              definitely not a carry weapon.

i used to have a steyr M9, has very very nice sights and is easy to point. definitely a shooter's pistol.

i graduated from that to a USP 40, but the .40 round is a little more snappy and difficult to control for whatever reason. USP 40 is decent, but expensive (just like any H-K)... but i still miss my steyr.
