  • Pastor Fred Phelps...

Quite possibly the biggest ******* known to man:

FORT CAMPBELL, Ky. -- Wearing vests covered in military patches, a band of motorcyclists rolls around the country from one soldier's funeral to another, cheering respectfully to overshadow jeers from church protesters.
They call themselves the Patriot Guard Riders, and they are more than 5,000 strong, forming to counter anti-gay protests held by the Rev. Fred Phelps at military funerals.
Phelps believes American deaths in Iraq are divine punishment for a country that he says harbors homosexuals. His protesters carry signs thanking God for so-called IEDs -- explosives that are a major killer of soldiers in Iraq.
The bikers shield the families of dead soldiers from the protesters, and overshadow the jeers with patriotic chants and a sea of red, white and blue flags.
"The most important thing we can do is let families know that the nation cares," said Don Woodrick, the group's Kentucky captain. "When a total stranger gets on a motorcycle in the middle of winter and drives 300 miles to hold a flag, that makes a powerful statement."
At least 14 states, including Oklahoma, are considering laws aimed at the funeral protesters, who at a recent memorial service at Fort Campbell wrapped themselves in upside-down American flags. They danced and sang impromptu songs peppered with vulgarities that condemned homosexuals and soldiers.
The Patriot Guard was also there, waving up a ruckus of support for the families across the street. Community members came in the freezing rain to chant "U-S-A, U-S-A" alongside them.
"This is just the right thing to do. This is something America didn't do in the '70s," said Kurt Mayer, the group's national spokesman. "Whether we agree with why we're over there, these soldiers are dying to protect our freedoms."
Shirley Phelps-Roper, a daughter of Fred Phelps and an attorney for the Topeka, Kan.-based church, said neither state laws nor the Patriot Guard can silence their message that God killed the soldiers because they fought for a country that embraces homosexuals.
"The scriptures are crystal clear that when God sets out to punish a nation, it is with the sword. An IED is just a broken-up sword," Phelps-Roper said. "Since that is his weapon of choice, our forum of choice has got to be a dead soldier's funeral."
The church, Westboro Baptist Church, is not affiliated with a larger denomination and is made up mostly of Fred Phelps' extended family members.
During the 1990s, church members were known mostly for picketing the funerals of AIDS victims, and they have long been tracked as a hate group by the Montgomery, Ala.-based Southern Poverty Law Center's Intelligence Project.
The project's deputy director, Heidi Beirich, said other groups have tried to counter Phelps' message, but none has been as organized as the Patriot Guard.
"I'm not sure anybody has gone to this length to stand in solidarity," she said. "It's nice that these veterans and their supporters are trying to do something. I can't imagine anything worse, your loved one is killed in Iraq and you've got to deal with Fred Phelps."
Kentucky, home to sprawling Fort Campbell along the Tennessee line, was among the first states to attempt to deal with Phelps legislatively. Its House and Senate have each passed bills that would limit people from protesting within 300 feet of a funeral or memorial service. The Senate version would also keep protesters from being within earshot of grieving friends and family members.
Richard Wilbur, a retired police detective, said his Indiana Patriot Guard group only comes to funerals if invited by family. He said he has no problem with protests against the war but sees no place for objectors at a family's final goodbye to a soldier.
"No one deserves this," he said.

Local radio show interviewed him: http://www.thebucketheadshow.com/cc-...ticle_id=60648 ... that's enough to just want to make you kick his ***.

QUICK STORY: This "pastor" and about 10 followers visits fallen soldiers funerals, where their families are mourning their deaths, and preeches that it's a good thing the soldiers died because they're all "fags" and they died for "fags". He brings signs that says "Thank God for IEDs", etc.

discuss... let's not talk religion. This guy is in no way "religious" although he may claim himself "a worker of God". He doesn't represent any ideals of a religion, so no religion bashing. I think any religious person, of any religion, thinks this guy is a douche.

Well he seems to be an extremist. If there is some site for those bikers, I would love to contact them and thank them for what they are doing. This guy is a straight up douche. Its good to know that people still care about our country.

Really... someone should just kill that *******, or let about 10 guys take turns raping him. That is ****ed up beyond all reason. I'm really surprised that none of the family members have done anything, yet. I'll be in the armed forces myself, and I know I'd be happy if my dad kicked someone's *** at my funeral for doing that, and I know if I had a son, brother, father, cousin, etc., that was killed in combat and had protestors like that at their funeral, quite a few of us would be in jail that night.

Never heard of the guy before, sounds like an idiot. That's horrible that they're protesting at funerals.

I'm not a fan of homosexuals either, but I'm not going to crash someone's funeral or pray that God sends them all to hell.

x2. I don't have a real "problem" with homosexuals, its just the homosexuals that decide to flaunt the fact that they are infact homosexual.

Most gays don't flaunt it, but the simple fact is, until you're a minority yourself, you will never realize the purpose of pride and other events of theat nature.

However, Fred Phelp's clan is primarily made up of his family members, and his church doesnt follow any standard of normal religion in the United States.

Many states are considering bans on military funeral protests, as a result of him.

If you don't recall, let me remind you. Fred Phelps was the man who picked Matthew Sheppards funeral in 1998, after he was brutally and mercilsesly beaten and left to die on a fence because he was gay by two men.

He made a website that has a midi of a boy screaming his lungs out, and saying that it was Matthew Sheppard's voices screaming from hell.

We lived in a ****** up society when we villify gays, and we have people like Phelps running around.

Good point with the last statement. I have no problem against homosexual's at all. Who cares if they flaunt it, whats the difference between a guy whootin' at a girl and vice versa?

Phelps should be beat. If I saw him in person, it would be worth the jail time to kick the **** out of him and i wouldn't stop. I don't even see how you can be ignorant and arrogant enough to go protest at a Soldiers funeral, hell even the BIGGEST hippies don't do that kind of ****. I hope Phelps burns in hell. yet another person on my list of "Would not care if this person died" list.

I've heard this story before and it still makes me angry.

It's not just for the disrespect this group gives to the Military families, but for their actions as a whole. They should be proud to live in a country that tolerates their "freedom of (hate) speech" and if they don't like the fact they have to coexist with those that choose to live their lives in a manner that offends this group, they should move.

I don't care where, they should just go. Maybe if they love the people that are attacking our forces overseas so much, maybe they should move there and see how long their "friends" take to cut their heads off?

                        Horrible.

EDIT: Ska, thanks for letting me know there's a group of big-hearted folks out there countering the whackjobs. Lightens my spirit, 'ya know?

Yeah we have run several of these stories at work. (abc affiliate) Members of his church came to picket the funeral of an evansville soldier. They also sent out press releases stating that not only are our militry members dying because our nation "encourages faggotry" (not my words guys, that was actually in a press release and is used here to show the intellect level) but that the november tornado that killed 20 something in evansville was retribution for the bill banning protestors from military funerals. They also praise god for the virginia mine accident and other completely assinine statements.

The church is called the westboro baptist church and there are based in ak. Phelps never actually goes to any of these protests because "there are those that would seek to hurt our leader for telling the truth." It is almost completely made up of his family members. If you want to subject yourself to, or respond to their idiocy you can laugh at their websites at (i'm not making this up, lol) westboro.com godhatesfags.com fredthemovie.com. They had all of their websites on a presser they sent out.

Yep, and doesn't matter, leader or follower.. I run into one of them at a funeral, they're going to get hurt. This is one time I wouldn't have a problem hitting a woman.

Also, I made a point not to post his websites becuase I didn't want to give him traffic... but do what you want.

                              You know.

I'm not going to lie here guys. I left this site a long time ago because I was appalled at how unwilling Stefan or any of the others seemed to be at stopping anti-gay, anti...well, almost everything , speech from going on.

I don't know what the story is with Stefan, and I sold my Firebird last fall (have a Grand Am GT right now, planning on selling that and getting a new car, maybe a WS6, not sure), but I just wanted to say how much better I feel these boards haev become.
