Well the gm 572 crate motor is 15k and it makes 620hp on pump gas and 720hp on race gas, so if this thing really puts out 1000hp, it's not that bad for 22k.
You could build one yourself for a lower price, probably, but then again, unless you did it yourself, you'd probably spend about as much, if not more, to do it right...
The ZZ572/620 looks so tempting... but with fuel injection, it's over $16k, I think... I'll take an LS7 for that much, though I wouldn't have as much power or torque.
Why do you guys thick thats a rip off? A crate ls7 cost $12999 from jegs. If you want to build a 1000hp small block, you need durable expensive parts otherwise it won't last. The Dart engine block alone cost $2400 with nothing on it or no work done to it. The crank, pistons, rods, etc probably cost another $3000-$4000. The CNC ported Brodix Track 1 heads cost $2200 with no porting etc. We're already at 8600 and we haven't even touched the valve train, manifolds, turbos, exhaust, or programming.
