Hurricanes used to be named entirely after women until 1978, when the women's lib movement put a stop to it. There are currently six lists of names (men's and women's) that are causasian and hispanic in origin. They are used annually on a rotating basis. When a hurricane is particularly devastating, it's name is retired.
