  • Which is better for modding: Iron or Aluminum block?

    Let's not turn this into LS1 vs. LT1 thing.

    But in general. Which block would be great for modding.

    I know that Iron is much stronger and has more potential. But Aluminum is better when it comes to dissepating heat. Therefore better HP gain.

    My general rule of thumb is...

    iron is better for a boosted engine, like turbo or blower, because it is stronger and more durable to high cylinder pressure.

    aluminum is better for NA because of reasons you mentioned above. It is also lighter, therefore superior for a road race type car.

      You can get power out of both motors... but generally the iron block holds up better to boost..
      There are a lot of guys with boosted or NOS on their LS1 though and they handle it just fine.. I would go with an LS1 even if I were going to supercharge it, they're just better motors to me.
      or better yet, get the 6.0L cast iron block and make it a 406 LS1 [img]smile.gif[/img]

            I've always been a fan of iron blocks, iron heads -- they withstand a LOT of pressure and power..

                I was planning on starting a buildup on a 6.0L LS1 ironblock sometime. 6.0L block + 4" stroke = 408 [img]smile.gif[/img] + juice = :D

                  an iron block will make more HP because it retains heat better and also the cylinder walls will stay straighter because iron doesnt move around as much as an aluminum block...but the weight savings of aluminum will overcome the extra HP made with an iron block...

                        if iron blocks were superior, why do newer cars have aluminum blocks?
