ha! i work for Directv, FREE TCPREMIERE, FREE digital video recording (not the cheapy Time Warner dvr or Dish pvr, but TIVO!), FREE NFL SUNDAY TICKET; And i've had AOL for over 1 year and haven't paid a dime for it. they always give it to you for free when u try to cancel. I just always say i'm gonna try another service, and they always "want to be there right along with the other service". and i don't do this but alot of friends do, a little trick for free cable. They get the Time Warner Roadrunner cable internet at the promotion prices (6 months @ 29.99), and take off the filter and split the cable for free basic cable and hbo/cinemax i think it is. then at the end of the promo, cancel, and in a month reorder and get the promo again.

they're making it really hard for people to cancel now. They just had some break in where one of their engineer's walked away and sold alot of email accounts to spammers. there was an arcticle in todays washing post about it. it took someone 20min to cancel. they dont even want you changing your email address over it. I dont know, broadband is the only upgrade imo

I used to work at the AOL Call Center in Ogden, UT. I was one of the Saves monkeys better known as the money hungry bastards who will let you rape our manholes if you'll just, please oh please, stay with AOL.

It's like car sales but you're a bigger whore for less money and not in person.

I was what they called a retention monger. I didn't take many calls but I did manage to retain wirtually 100% of those members I did save long enough to get my 90 day retention bonus which was like $7.50 at the time. Made for some hefty checks. Once I managed to get over $4000 on one bonus check.

I loved backwoods rednecks the most (I talked to a lot of Funderburks. I swear they all have the same last name before getting married). Talk too fast for them to understand and they thank you and hang up and chalk up one more dollar on my 24hr retention check.

I hated that job. Only positive part was the paychecks.

Key to getting an actual true cancellation is listening to the whole cancel confirmation speil. If you get pissed and hang up it's your butt, not theirs. I dealt with a lot of people who were in a hell of a hurry and thought it would somehow teach us a lesson if they hung up on me while saying my piece. Heh. Nope.
