• Router help, want to hide port 113

I can't for the life of me figure out how to hide my IDENT port. This might seem weird to those of you who know what I'm talking about, but I just want to stealth my new router. This seems to be the only port that responds to probes.

My router is a D-link DI-624. I've already tried to forward incoming requests on 113 to a none-existent IP, but that didn't work. I'm stumped

I thought all ports were closed unless opened via port forwarding?
If I were on the network I could mess around and figure it out... can't be much help to you though :(

Most likely the router its self is providing ident service. Instead of looking in the port config, try looking for an ident option in the router setup.

I just did a little research for ya. Is it a D-Link router? If so, it might not be possible to close it.

Personally, I wouldn't worry about the ident service on the router, the chances of someone exploiting it are like not worth mentioning. If you're worried though, some people seem to have secured it a little bit by using port forwarding and forwarding the traffic on that port to a non-existent IP on the local network.

EDIT:

Doh, nevermind, you did all that. Christ I need to learn how to read. It's too late.

Port 113 reports back as closed, while all my other ports don't respond to probes. I've even got my router dropping pings, but this one little port doesn't want to listen to me

I guess its not that important, but its cool to look invisible on the internet

many security experts feel that giving any information to the other side is wrong. so you should be able to disable ident. looking at the following link:

http://support.dlink.com/faq/view.as...8&question=113

it looks like you can redirect the ident requests but cant completely prevent the router from trying to forward them.

Wow, that worked! Thank you so much. I don't know what I did wrong in the first place :dunce:
I swear I remember searching their site, guess I didn't look hard enough.
