Just as the subject says, is it legal or illegal to download songs off the internet? I've read from several places that it is perfectly legal, just sharing (letting others download from you) is the illegal part. My parents swear it is ALL illegal, because thats what they hear from tv and newspapers. I've looked up articles on the internet, and from what i've read they just try to make it sound like its illegal, but they've never directly said that JUST downloading is illegal. SO, does anybody know for sure the law about this?? If its legal do you have a site or info proving it?

i don't have any official site or anything to prove it, but i'm pretty sure it's illegal... this is based on my friend's dad getting a letter from some major record label (don't remember which one) warning that they need to stop sharing songs on kazaa or they might be dragged into a lawsuit. so they saved all the songs into a folder and deleted kazaa and got what i have: WinMX. it's great and it's not all over the news.

Its illegal. Common sense. You didn't purchase it, it's illegal. If you purchased the CD, you could download it as a backup to your purchased copy.Matt

Sharing is illegal
downloading is legal, plus there are way too many loopholes that a lawyer could get you out with anyhow [img]smile.gif[/img]
such as saying they are songs from cds that i owned, so "archival backups" and then your cds were stolen/broken/lost/destroyed/whatever. They only PROSECUTE those that share a lot of files.... so, if you mean illegal to be "will I or my friends be caught?" then the answer is that sharing is illegal, and downloading is legal. :cool:
