  • Any experience or info w/'98 Eclipse GST

Any ever have an experience or any good information on a '98 Eclipse GST. My friend just got one and I do believe its a 2.0L Turbo FWD, but its Automatic.

I heard their auto tranmissions are garage, shifting and general problems. Any quick mods to raise the boost ya think or to get good power? From what I read its like a high 14.9 car with a stick and low 15 with an auto. Like 210hp I think.

Anyone else ever have one or have a friend with one? 1/4 about right? THX. Course I could care less with my LS1 but just looking for some info. :D

I'd think a boost guage/switch, and turboback exhaust would be worth some decent hp, intake too!

Yea girl I know upgraded the turbo and the tranny died in less than 1000 miles.

Upgrade the turbo, new downpipe, intake, exhaust, boost controller, there are tons of things to do to them. Tell him to go to a Eclipse board ;)

transmissions are horrible, they die when you beat them.

my buddy did a 5000 rpm launch, his car just stopped dead after the 60 foot. he blew the transmission up, including the carrier.

I owned one. It was a manual so the tranny wasnt a problem, actually it was decent. But the electrical systems on those cars are notoriously crap. I constantly blew thru coils, had random ignition problems, yadda yadda yadda. It can be quick, but just unreliable as hell. It seems like people are always replacing parts cause they break, not to upgrade them.

what do you mean man? it doesnt matter auto or manual, manuals are faster but they are terrible unless rebuilt for beating on. My friends GST blew a hole in the transmission the size of a grape fruit.

but anyways your right, they are not too bad, you just cannot catch traction at high rpm, the initial shock on a launch is what kills dsm trannys.

As long as you dont pull some crazy launches, your transmission will last a long time. This is the number 1 rule to stock dsm drivers.

Do not rev, do not drop, or you will go no where.

Well thats just ricer syndrome. Pegging the revv limiter before the launch is not the best way to launch any car, but try explaining that to a ricer... Its a FWD car, weight distribution is not on your side either. Not to mention the hideous torque steer. It was a fun car, but after smoking from the hood many many times, and dropping all the oil once, I was done.
