Whatever. Actually the US has one of the best public school systems. We educate everybody, not all countries do.

Why do the high school Japenese test better in Math and Science than our high school students you ask? Because we educate everyone in Math and Science even those that don't show an aptitude for it. Japan teaches advance Math and Science to only those students that show an aptitude for it. Therefore it is comparing apples and oranges.

The US public school system gives a well rounded education to all students.

I am so pissed off my parents didn't teach me any languages as a kid. My mom speaks Spanish fluently and my dad knows Arabic, Kurdish, Turkish, and Farsi. If they taught me I could be pulling down 200,000 bucks a year as a document translator. Grrrr...

As for foriegn students seeming more intelligent, the people who come to the USA to study are the cream of the crop from Japan, China, India, etc. If you took the States' top students to those countries I'm sure we'd kick most everyone's asses in academics.

Well, actually there are 3.. I forgot about Hawaii...

Hawaii (English and Hawaiian), Louisiana (English and French) and New Mexico (English and Spanish).

California was for 30 years, but is no longer... it printed it's first constitution in both English and Spanish I believe.

Also, counties have the ability to make their county bilingual, as long as their state doesn't have a law against it. Example: Miami-Dade is English/Spanish.

82% of US households speak only english at home.

that site quotes spoked at home...not at work...so just keep that in mind...alot of those people PROBABLY do speak english to an extent making those #'s even smaller so your talking lets say 85% at the work place compared to 7% being its closest...my point being i dont think english will be taken over by any other language any time soon.

I don't know what you are smoking man... according the latest U.S. census (2000) 4.1% of the population does not speak English well. If you modify that to "speaks little or no English" the number drops to around 2%. Where the heck did you get 25% from???

As far as I'm concerned, if somebody comes into America and tries to speak spanish to me, I'm not going to give them the time of day. Now if I were to go to a spanish speaking country, i'd learn it, but I never plan on going to mexico, spain, etc.
Wow, we got some patriots in here. It's something like 25-30% of Americans don't speak English. Why would you not want to learn another language? Are you so nieve to think that English is the master language? There is no national language of the United States. English is just the most widely used language in America, which is slowly declining by the way. I hate to break it to you, but English isn't even the most widely spoken language in the world either.

Let's say you own a business and you're looking for investors to help you get off the ground. A man walks in with his checkbook in his hand but doesn't speak a word of English. Would you just get up and walk away then? Or let's say you own your own body shop. Would you tell them to leave because you can't understand them?

According to the US Census 47 million people over the age of 5 do not speak English at home. I was a little high on the percentage. It's only 18%. It's been awhile since I seen the exact numbers.
