Pontiac is more upscale and more oriented toward performance. Back in the days of first and second gens the Firebird and Camaro were actually different cars and it was well-known that the Firebird/Trans Am could blow the doors off the Camaro. Today the differences are cosmetic but they are still there. Camaros look cheaper and flimsier, hence they sell for less.
My take is, why settle for a Camaro when you can spend $1000-ish more and get a Firebird--a much nicer car?
I never understood why people ever bought Camaros.

The ws6 ran a 13.1 to the SS's 13.7, and the reasons given were that it was easier to make the firebird hook and that it didn't have options like power windows to weigh it down. I'll agree that you could order a z/28 without some of the options that were standard on a trans am, but if you were buying for performance a formula ws6 was the best bang for the buck.
