The reason there are more Camaros is that Camaro is cheaper because Chevrolet is by and large a volume brand, and therefore cheaper. Stefan hit the nail on the head in that respect.
The first gen was in fact Camaro dominant along the straights, but the Firebird handled better than any level Camaro except RPO Z28.
In the second gen a TA 455SD would walk any Camaro from the same year. By the time the T/A 6.6L came out, it was faster than the Corvette. All this time they still handled better than Camaros. Z28 was killed in this time period, whereas the TA had record sales.
The third gen introduced corporate engines to both vehicles, and performance was identical. The TTA was the exception, and remains one of the quickest production Fbodies.
For the 4th Gen, the cars were essentially evenly matched.
I've purposefully excluded Firehawks from the discussion of the 3rd and 4th gen because they are not production models.
