my router went up on me like a wek ago (it was a d-link) and so i got a new one its a linksys. it works great but for some reasson it screws up aim. it was sign me on and off every hour or so it seems. like if i put a away message u pand go watch tv and coem back it shows the person i was talkign to came on and off a half dozen tiems when its really me. but the point im trying to get to is that has anyone else had this problem or can u reccomend me a good brand router to get? ive done abotu everything. unconnect it reconnect it do the install over again unistalled aim then reinstalled it then get a new version of it, then did a system restore and still have the problem. the only thing i havnt done is call the manufactuer andim going to do that tomarrow.

i know exactly what you are talking about, i have never really come to a definite solution, i've gone through d-link, linksys, and am currently on netgear, i thought netgear was a winner, but recently it began dropping the connection and not getting it back, but overall netgear is better, and if you are on a wireless connection, aim tends not to like those

yeah, i mainly have that problem at my dad's house, on a wireless connection netgear, the netgear i got for christmas was great and never dropped a connection until last week, i just dont want to deal with tech support to get a new one yet, maybe this weekend, but its a WPN824, it was great and i have no doubt the next one will

hey i sent a email to the linksys technical support and this what they said. it might help some of you guys out.
Dear Valued Linksys Customer,
Thank you for contacting Linksys Technical Support.
You have a problem with AOL Instant Messenger having intermittent connection.
The application requires forwarding the port for your AOL IM. The router should permit application and access requests coming in from the Internet for your Messenger Buddy.
As the application requires certain ports to be opened on the router, try to follow the steps below to configure the router. But first you must assign a static IP address on the PC. To properly assign an IP address, you must first verify the DNS server address of the PC.
To check for DNS server of the PC:
For Windows XP & 2000
1. Click start, choose run
2. Type cmd, click ok
3. Type IPCONFIG/ALL then press enter.
4. Look for DNS Servers.
For Windows 95, 98 & ME
1. Click start, choose run
2. Type winipcfg, click ok, the IP Config window would appear
3. Choose your network adapter from drop down menu
4. Click on More Info
5. Look for DNS servers. Click on the "..." button to obtain the other addresses.
To statically assign an IP address
Windows 2000 and XP:
1. Click start, choose Control Panel
2. Double click Network Connections
3. Right click Local Area connections then select properties
4. Select “Use the following IP address” then enter on the IP address type 192.168.1.45 Subnet mask is 255.255.255.0 then Default Gateway is 192.168.1.1
5. Select “Use the following DNS numbers” then enter the DNS on both Preferred and Alternate (You may check this out by following the steps above for "Checking for DNS server of a PC" )
Windows 95, 98 and ME:
1. Click Start, choose Settings then Control Panel
2. Double click network
3. Highlight TCP/IP -> for your network adapter ( Ex. TCP/IP->Linksys Etherfast 10/100 Network Adapter )
4. Click Properties
5. Select Specify an IP address then enter on the IP address type 192.168.1.45 Subnet mask 255.255.255.0 then Default Gateway is 192.168.1.1
6. Select Gateway tab. On New Gateway type 192.168.1.1 and click add
7. Select DNS configuration tab. Enable DNS then type your first name on Host. Then on the DNS Server Search Order type the first DNS number then click Add, do the same thing with the second DNS (You may check this out by following the steps above for "Checking for DNS server of a PC" )
8. Click OK all the way until it prompts you to reboot the computer
9. Reboot PC
To forward ports on the router :
1. Open your default browser and enter the following into the address bar: http://192.168.1.1
2. Leave the username blank and type is admin as password, unless you have previously changed the password of the router, and click OK. You will then be directed to the Setup tab where you will be able to configure the router.
3. Click on Applications and Gaming Tab.
4. On the first line, Under Application, type the name of the application then under Start & End Port, type the range of ports that the application requires. Click both TCP and UDP then type the IP Address that you statically assigned to your PC then check Enabled. If in case using just a single port, you may type in the same number from Start to End field.
5. Hit Save Settings button.
To make sure router will accept the application port, make sure Block WAN Request or Block Anonymous Internet Request is disabled under Security tab.
