i have cats, i love cats and i've had them my whole life. what you want is just a short hair cat. if you go to your local spca i think that it's like $50 to adop. one. plus your save it's life. if your going to be at work all day i would say get one that is a full grown cat(over a year old) and the spca will "fix" if for you. plus most of the shots. if you have anymore questions just ask. i'm a animal expert!

yeah I was going to check out the pound and some animal shelters
thats where we got a few animals
they always seem so grateful to be out of the dang cage
the hardest thing about those places is not getting every one that I see
I feel so bad for them
will they have labels to see how old they are?
do short hair cats not shed as much?
I checked out spca cuz I wasnt sure what that was

What do I look for a in a good vet? I know if I were to take my kids to a doctor I wouldnt just grab the yellow pages and take them to the first doctor I see, so I figure I should check out a couple vets and see how they are, but I'm really not sure what to look for.
How can I tell if it is a good natured animal?
Do I need to "train" a cat?

After owning both, I'd rather go back to my little dog.

The cat I have is really easy to maintain. I have one of those automatic litter boxes, and the cat will go haywire if it jams or something, which is only like twice a month. I go in there twice a week and replace the bin that the thing scoops the piss and crap into and just empty it...then refill the poop area as needed.

I also have a tent thing around the whole box, so the stupid cat won't fling the litter around everywhere. Every morning, when I wake up, she just goes nuts, dump some dry food into her bowl and she's better.

The cat is definitely easier to take care of, when people come to the house, they barely notice her and there is no smell of an animal.

The draw back is that the cat is not nearly as good as a companion as a dog is. My cat will let you pet her for a few minutes, then go about her business somewhere else in the house. This not used to bother me, but since my girlfriend and I broke up over a year ago, it gets very lonely in the house and would be much better with a dog. But I'll keep my cat till it dies.

Since you rent, I suggest you get a small dog. My buddy has a doberman, and his choices of apartments/houses to rent are VERY small. Save getting a bad *** dog till you have your own house.

I cannot get a dog right now
there is no way I can be a good loving owner working so much
there are days where I work 14 hrs
that is just too much time away from it
I love my dog more than anything (at mom's house) and even other peoples dogs I will let them give me kisses
Dogs are awesome, I just can't take care of one right now

A cat would be perfect for you then. I got my cat from the pound about...8 years ago now? I think its called an american grey cat, I get compliments all the time on how goregeous of a cat it is.

Definitely go to the pound and adopt a kitten or animal control center.

some cats are more social than others. Males tend to be more so, from what I have seen. My one cat is my buddy. I worked at home most of this weekend, and he fussed until I picked him up and sat him on my lap. He laid there for almost 2 hours while I worked. He will also jump up on the couch and curl into me while I watch television, rolling over and working his way underneath my hand so that I have to scratch his belly. He is practically a dog that I can leave alone for a weekend if I have to travel.

maybe thinking they would be meaner?
if I get him fixed does that pretty much take care of any problems?

you shouldnt have a problem with them spraying or anything once they are fixed. We had a stray male that lived on our porch for a while. He was still 'intact' and was incredibly friendly. Just when he played with your he could get a bit rough, but that is to be expected since he was used to catching his own meals.

Our female cat on the other hand is a real *****. very particular, very jealous, and is actually vengeful. She'll beat the crap out of the male for no reason other than he might get more attention. She despised me when I moved in with my wife. Took over 1 1/2 years for her to stop hissing every time I walked into the same room as her. now she loves me.

go to the shelter or wherever you plan on adopting and spend some time going from one cage to the next and see which cats respond to you. most of them will probably just lay there and stare at you, see if you find one that will come up and try to get your attention. Pick one based on its personality and response to you rather than on looks.
