Ditto about what he said about female cats. Its like mine will remember the time I ignored her and didn't let her out on the linai, and then will proceed to bite my leg.

Mine also gets jealous.

Cats are easier to maintain than dogs. They love giving you the attention and very affectionate. The only problem I have is that I have two Parageets and fishes. By nature, cats love to attack those.

ok for the vet, find out where you take your dog(your moms dog) and go to the same place, if he doesn't have a vet ask neighbors where they take there animals and how they like it, then you can choose from their. all cats sheed but short hair isn't as bad. if you want a lovie cat deff get a male. females seem to be more independent(as in any chick) where every you go to adop. they should be able to cats age. i know it's hard to go into the spca or any place like that but wouldn't you rather save one animals life than none! i can tell you now don't get a kitten cause your not home enough. get a full grown cat and you take it home and 99% of the time all you have to do is show them where the litter and their food and water is a few times and they will take it from there. have toys, bed, food, water, a of course the litter and that is it!

Our female cat on the other hand is a real *****. very particular, very jealous, and is actually vengeful. She'll beat the crap out of the male for no reason other than he might get more attention. She despised me when I moved in with my wife. Took over 1 1/2 years for her to stop hissing every time I walked into the same room as her. now she loves me.

go to the shelter or wherever you plan on adopting and spend some time going from one cage to the next and see which cats respond to you. most of them will probably just lay there and stare at you, see if you find one that will come up and try to get your attention. Pick one based on its personality and response to you rather than on looks.

yeah I am def going to adopt one from somewhere like the spca
good advice about the kitten, whats gonna be hard to turn down is the sucker are so cute that young!
most are housebroken at the pound or what?
how do they know to use the litter box? instict?
my dog we had to train for like a month before he would tell us he wanted to go outside (on a disgusting side note, he mistook us shoving his nose towards it as he was supposed to eat it if he had any accidents he would eat the evidence lol)
anyways, I will go out his week and start looking at cats and see how they take a liking to me and vice versa

they pretty much come litter trained. Just instinct I guess. Our stray had never been indoors until a really bad storm last year. my wife felt bad, brought him in and put him in the guest room with a litter box and a wicker basket filled with towels for a bed and some food. we went in an hour later to check on him and he had **** in the litter box, ate all the food and was sleeping in the basket.

lol awesome, I only hope I can get that lucky

oh Kristen, btw about the vet
I live an hour and a half from our old vet, but that is a good idea about asking the neighbours where they go

-------

how much of a cost am I looking at to get it ready to live with me?
I know there is an adoption fee (50 to 75 I think it usually runs)
but hopefully getting an older cat I wouldn't have to spend as much at the vet to get him ready.
toys, bed, food, litter, and box I should be able to keep under $150 right?
I'm thinking I should have right around $300 extra before I start this up.

yeah, and remember to keep some extra money for unexpected vet visits and all that good stuff.

the spca rates very, my cat was $50, and like i said that if you get one from the spca if they aren't fix already they will fix them, and all the first years shots. if you keep it as an indoor cat(which i think should be done) you really don't need to use a vet much. to be honest my cats are healthy and they all got their first year shots but they haven been back in like 3 years(they are almost 4 years old) but they are healthy. a litter box(the one with the link should come with a scoop, if not buy one) is about 25 if you get one that has hole for them to craw threw which i have found cats like alot better, litter go to big tub(always buy bulk if your lookin got save) you should but clumping litter the litter says way cleaner 100000% easier to clean, all you have to do is scoop, and chuck and your done. if you get plain old tidy cat then you have to clean the whole box more. plus the clumping stuff dones let the stink out like the other litter. i will put some links on of the stuff i get and would recomend to everyone. food, always leave dry food out and water. i give my cats wet food quater of a can in the morning and quater of a can at dinner. bed, you will see that cats love sheep skin beds, never hurts to have one but alot of the time cats will just cuddy up on your bed, couch etc.

oh before i forget i found that petsmart has the best prices most of the time. and NEVER BUY IAMS PET FOOD. they do alot of very harsh animal testing. and their form of funding is their line of pet food.

dont forget a scratching post or something for them to sink their claws into.

Our cats sleep on just about anything other than their actual beds. just leave out a clean shirt that you dont want fur on, they love those.

good point about the claws. if you get a cat that about a year or so old i would go to the vet to get it de-clawed. all my cats are then you don't have to worry about them scratching everything up. but then you have to make sure that it's a indoor cat
